A new short french demo of the SONY PMW-F3

Hi everyone !
Find here a french demo shoot with SONY F3, on SXS, so in 4:2:0…

http://vimeo.com/16981467

shoot with ZEISS GO 1.4
Graded on colorus…
the dynamic range is just amazing with F3…
so i’m starting to be very afraid of the dynamic range of the AF 101 now in comparaison.
More i see the demo of AF101, more i doubt about the look, i’m feeling it to much video with a strange feeling of interlacing in the mouvement of the characters even shot in 1080P, and a so bad dynamic range !

Maybe some personnal tests between the two camera will resolve my doubt !

For using only light aux naturale, impressive. Lots of good detail in highlights, blacks, and high-chroma areas.

Cute little story!

For a camera thats three times the price it should look better, and these shots were made over 8 days, not part of one day. You can do things when you have time to make plans.

I agree these shots are gorgeous, but you can still blow out the highlights with the F3. Look at this crop closely.

Beautiful film, but not a great test of dynamic range. Everything was shot overcast with some occasional hazy sun.

Still, the camera looks great.

agreed matthew. You can get away with a lot in overcast. This is why I love shooting in pittsburgh. But the sony imo looks better in terms of detail but I still think panasonic will prove to be the best in colors.

Same here, I am not saying that the f3 is good or bad in dynamic range, but all these example except the Australian one (made good use of silhouettes) was shot in overcast sky. How can people give an opinion on dynamic range in overcast weather!!! Either they don' t know light at all or they know things that I don' t. I hope we are not in for one of those crazy momments we saw for the panasonic af-100 tokyo shots.

How can you say this is not a good test for dynamic range? this film utilized just about every type of situation you could shoot in. Day, night, sunny, overcast, lit scene's, match lit scene's. He did a great job of showing what this camera is capable of. Im truely blown away by this camera, And to be honest, I have always hated Sony products, (less the ex series). But I truely feel they have a winner here. Panisonic is no slouch. It's only a small matter of time before they have something to compete with this. There's no reason to hand the higher end to Sony. Five years ago, this would be a sixety thousand dollar+ camera. Great times for filmmakers.

You do realize that you can blow out anything right? And have you even looked at all the footage, the camera DOES look 3 times better if not more. It looks like Alexa footage for god sakes.

Every one needs to take a big breath, until these cameras are tested head to head we really can not say that one is 3 times better or not. What we do know is soon we will have a lot more choice of cameras to work with. At this time none of the new large sensor cameras (except the RED 1 and the Alexa) can be bought, over the next few months we should start to see some objective tests of the new cameras at which time we will know how much better or worse one camera is over another. What we have at this time is some beautifully produced shorts by some very talented professionals using preproduction equipment.

I wasn't trying to knock the F3, in fact I thought it looked gorgeous. My comment was more in defense of the AF100. I intended to convey that, you can blow out the highlights with any camera, even one that produces pictures as gorgeous as this.

It doesn't need to be 3 times better, just to produce a better picture. In this case the F3 with a bit more dynamic range, will likely produce a better picture in slightly more strenuous circumstances making it a bit more versatile. (In which case it will save your @ss once in awhile where you would have blown the shot on an AF100.)

I love the look of the F3, and this was in 4.2.0 at 35Mbps. It will look that much better at 4.2.2 and 100Mbps.

I can't wait to see what the AF100 does when the next round of clips comes out.
