A New Blade Runner?

WTF!

Why mess with a classic that was perfect?

I'm going to be sick.

They aren't remaking it. From what I've heard it's just a new story set in the same world. My only question is, Blade Runner is set in 2019. I highly doubt we will develop levitating cars, incredibly lifelike androids and have off world colonies in eight years.

Excerpt: And one has to assume Scott’s experience in revisiting his classic film Alien, through the semi-prequel Prometheus, has probably left him with the confidence and good will to jump back into futuristic Los Angeles. One thing is for sure, the world of Blade Runner could look great in 3D and http://www.slashfilm.com/ridley-scott-work-3d/Scott has said he would never work without 3D again.

Excerpt: ...whatever this new Blade Runner is, it will “stand as separately as possible” from the 1982 film.

I agree with you (way more these days, with the release of Conan remake...WTF? Arnold might not be a great "actor" in terms of performance, but I doubt that someone could easily step in his shoes and "replace" him...).
But on the other hand, Scott was the visionary director that created that classic, so I guess he's the best person to even "touch" that classic again. Imho.

Conan isn't a remake, it's an adaptation same as the previous Conan films were. It's the same thing as making a Batman, Superman or Spiderman movie.

And the same can be said for Blade Runner. Lord of the Rings was adapted previously before this latest adaptation.

However, I don't think there's a remote chance that they're doing a remake. This will probably be a sequel in name only, maybe giving a brief nod to Harrison's character.

They took the Alien prequel idea and are now saying that Prometheus isn't necessarily an Alien prequel. They said it *could* be an alien prequel, but even if you interpreted it that way, Alien would not be the sequel to Prometheus.

And if I remember correctly there was like 5 different versions of blade runner, not exactly the definition of a movie that has not been messed with.

Listen to the commentary by the writers it's... interesting. One of them went on to write his own movie "a boy and his dog" which seems to be the inspiration for the fallout game series.

Honestly I've said it before I don't mind remakes as I just ignore and do not recognize them if they are bad. If anything it could possibly introduce a new audience to the original. Oh and in my opinion Conan is not the equivalent of superman, the Arnold movie surpassed the comics in fame and overtook them, not a single of the great comic series has had that happen to them by a movie, once again in my opinion. So to remake it is just... weird unless you have another Arnold. Though you are correct it is a new adaptation of the comic, but who is to say that's what we all loved, perhaps it was the Arnold movies take on it and Arnold portrayal that made us love it. Ah it doesn't matter wasted to much on that off topic train of thought. (Arnold knocking out the camel was amazing)

Alien prequel intrigues me, blade runner whatever I'll admit worries me as well but as I said if it sucks, it doesn't exist in the franchise it's like a fan film.

hopefully people will stop half assing movies and respect the material from where it originated from and the person who created it in the first place. then again if we all did we might not have the original Conan and many other classics so...

Yeah conan was what it was but for me since childhood whenever i imagined conan i saw Arnold and nothing will change that and there is no need to throw millions of $ to fight this, they have so many other stories to pick up, why going at obvious failure ?

I hope it will it include van damme cameo like in original*

Here's hoping they call it Blade Runner 2: Electric Bugaloo.

AWESOME. Electric "Sheep" Bugaloo

For the record, since I was the OP, I'm not losing any sleep over this new venture. Good or bad, it doesn't diminish the fact that Blade Runner kicked mucho ass. I'm sure whatever comes out in a few years will be interesting.

And inside scoop, I hear Ozone and Turbo have signed on to be break dancin' replicants.

Blade Runner is one of my top 5 favorite films. Surprisingly though, I am not really worried about this for 3 primary reasons:

1) They have stated a desire to do something different with this film, whether it is called Blade Runner 2 or something completely different (kinda like how Ridley is doing Prometheus, even though it ties into the Alien mythology).

2) It is Ridley Scott, the man who made the defining film of a cinematic style of dark, cyberpunkish, dystopic films. I think this counts for a lot. Just look at the Alien films for example. James Cameron's sequel was the only one that looked like it fit in the same fictional future world that Ridley established in Alien. Of course, the fact that Ridley Scott is returning isn't a guarantee of a good or great sequel (Indiana Jones 4/Star Wars prequels had the original creators behind the camera and those weren't nearly as good as the originals in each series).

3) They have the original Philip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" to go back to for extra inspiration. The Blade Runner/DADOES universes are chock full of interesting opportunities for completely new characters, settings, and storylines. Just think of all the possible alternate settings aside from the dark and oppressive L.A. of 2019 that they could set this in. The Offworld Colonies. Futuristic versions of some of Earth's major cities: Paris, Rome, Brazil, Moscow, Berlin, Florence, etc. I'd love to see an old world city like Rome or Florence blended with the run down but high tech style that Ridley Scott and futurist/concept designer Syd Mead gave to Blade Runner's Los Angeles.

The fact that Sir Ridley Scott (he's a knight you know) is directing this, is a win win overall. This film at least has a chance of being a worthy follow up to the classic Blade Runner. This is not Paul W.S. Anderson making an Aliens movie in place of Ridley Scott or James Cameron. This is not McG making a PG-13 Terminator prequel. This is Ridley Scott making another movie set in the Blade Runner universe.

Sure it could suck. But at least the deck is stacked in both the film's and the audience's favor.

I'm glad he's finally going back to sci-fi; with his meticulous attention to detail we will be guaranteed something visually exciting (irrespective of the quality of the story).

Enough of the the medieval stuff already - lets just pretend Robin Hood never happened.

God I hope they don't screw it up. Blade Runner is one of the few movies that still looks awesome to this day. And it was made in 1982, that's incredible!

I hope they don't put special effects before a good story. A good plot with intelligent dialog sure would be nice. I know I'm asking for a lot..

I don't have a problem with a sequel. Now if it was a prequel or a remake, that would be a big NO. I really can't stand prequels and remakes, specially of good films. Name me a single prequel that was better than the original film, or a Remake...
