A moral Decision - grabs -

( Wow, it's actually called Moral Dilemma, guess im still sleeping )

Hey all,

thought i would share with ya some grabs of dvx/canon A1 combo. Jonathan Starr ( from the boards ) wrote and directed it, i just lent him the tools and myself as a puppet/actor. The shots came out surprisingly well. In terms of lighting and CC, well, we shot mostly outdoors and the only light we used was for the interior silhouette stuff.

story is about a boy who is deciding if he should or should not commit a school shootings and the struggles he endures within his own imagination.

With the dvx, we used the ifocus HQ and the blueish stuff was all shot with the canon A1. Enjoy. feel free to comment on anything. (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Scary. So how do you find the footage matching up? Did you use the A1 in SD mode? Grabs look good. I'd be tempted to grade the ext. stuff, but you might have the look you want. Looking forward to the clip.

:) it's good ot know people read and not just look at the photos

hehe the dvx was shot with the ifocus HQ. If they appear soft, thats because the focus might have been slightly off for that still.

i feel like the longer i'm a member of dvxuser, there is a progressively lessened amount of attention my threads get...

i could probably work on my grammar too....

What's the aspect ratio? 2.76:1? I happen to like how wide it is. Nice and good lighting in the dark gun scenes. I actually prefer the exterior DVX shots overall, look more filmic to me.

haha, i agree... peeps dont seem to care to comment. or, we just suck PaPa :)
love the aspect ratio too.. i like pushing the norm, maybe we will eventually get to having this tiny thin strip where u cant see a thing. "yes its art" we will say. Really like the urban feel u have going in those grabs. u capturing the wide shots with alot of grungy urban space. love it from an architectural point of view. But i get the feeling that the colours (mainly the yellow/brown/red shots) could get quite draining when watching the footage. I like that they are pale, but maybe saturate them and choose the colours u want to boost and softly edge them into saturation. just my feeling, they look like they could get dull at the moment. i dunno. what u think?

i used pp1.5 real quick to do that. i use the color correction in the effects foler. it opens every colour wheel, RGB stats, hue/saturation, gamma stats etc.. all in one. then u play around with them till u get what u want. but for serious fun and experimenting (my usual practice) is 2 have two cc'd layers in AE on top of each other. the one below is my primary (in this case the saturated one) and then the boosted colour i put above and drop the opacity then find the right blending option by skimming thru them. ooo... seems long. but its not when u decided what u want before hand. help?

i meant more like, the image is almost black and white, however the reds still remain.. Not sure hwo to achieve something to that effect.

Yeah same here I like how wide it looks.

I really like the colour corrected still that was posted by another member, it's more atmospheric. IMO the greens look slightly washed out on the original and it's all gloomy but not in a good way - to me it's reminiscent of a bad film print. However I just love the framing of the shots it makes me really excited to see the whole thing. I just th ink you may need to stylise it a bit more.

good stuff john. as for the "scope" i remember our brief discussion on that way back when...i'm still doing my whole method, but when you shoot how are you framing? are you framing using the whole 4:3 and then framing the shot you want in post or are you actually framing the "scope" area that you want when you shoot?

we shot on the dvx SQUEEZe mode, with rubber bands as our framing converters to give us the 2.35:1 ratio, and the blue stuff we shot with the canon A1 without an adapter, which had the ratio already included in the display.

They may have been slightly squished when i exported it to photoshop, i.e. they might actually be lsightly taller than what we see.

Yeah, they're a bit more stretched out than they normally are, but only slightly. We had to cut the tops and bottoms for the dvx because of how the DVX shoots more than what you see on the lcd, thus we had a boom in the shot just at the top, lol. Plus the shots weren't at they're full potential. We're new to using a boom for this film, and the sound is not the best, but not unusable.

Thanks Papa for posting the grabs. He's really a great guy to work with as an actor and filmmaker, even if he can get tempermental. ;)

Also the color grading, although they look nice, they're not the final. Especially for the shots with the grafitti. It's just Papa having some fun with photoshop.

In the end the night scenes work, but the grafitti shots will be with a bit more contrast. There's all kinds of textures and shadings (not to mention the grafitti) on the wall that will really pop with a touch of contrast. Plus the colors are very vivid in those shots (I think Papa desaturated them slitghly), and I may want to work WITH the colors. But Papa and I will work together on the final grading.

The shots between the A1 and DVX, Papa and I still need to work together to match, but seeing as they're meant to juxtapose the images, I don't notice any problems at the moment. But I guess I may be an untrained eye when it comes to the diff between standard on the AI and the DVX with adapter, lol.

After all, Papa is the expert when it comes to the DVX and A1. Guess cause they're his cameras. :)

"even if he can get tempermental. ;)"

yeah, that happens to me when my equipment falls into mudd. lol

lol, I felt so bad when that happened. I mean here you were helping us, taking you time to be in it and provide the equipment, and then you lose your shoe in the mudd and drop the cord in the mudd. When you were mumbling "I can't do this" I was just like "oh crap... what do I say? What do I do?"
