A monopod head compatible to 701HDV

I am looking for a quick release monopod head that will at minimum tilt and has a quick release that will fit on the 701HDV head as well. Is anyone aware of one?

Thanks in advance...

I'm not sure what you want exactly, but have you looked at the Manfrotto 560B?

Actually wouldn't any Manfrotto quick release plate just screw into the bottom of your head?

There are a couple different types of quick release and many are compatible with your 701HDV. Have you tried the 701HDV? It is a perfect match and has the same functionality because it is the same.

Sorry, I will explain further. I have a monopod and I am looking for a small, compact tilt head that has a quick release that will be compatible with my 701HDV so I can switch between.

I would be interested in the Manfrotto 234RC but unfortunately the plates aren't compatible with the 701HDV. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

If I understand you correctly, and I'm not sure I do, you want to put a small tilt head on your monopod that uses the same plate as your 701HDV head that's on your tripod. Correct?

I believe the 701 uses the common 501PL plate. Do you know if that's the case? If it is, then you can just get a Manfrotto 577 quick adapter that comes with a 501 plate and attach it to any tilt head you choose to buy.

Check it carefully, though, in case I'm misunderstanding what you want.

Correct Ron, sorry that I haven't been very clear. That makes sense. I guess i was looking for a solution that had the adapter (self contained), but this will work. Thanks!

I use this monopod, which is really nice:

It uses the same plate (501PL). The problem is, I don't see an option to purchase the head alone. Incidentally, the tilting is a function of the head, but panning occurs at the base of the monopod, which has a ball and socket mount. You could replace your current monopod with this one, but it ain't cheap. The quick release adapter may be your best bet.

Ya, I tried that one out. It is really nice, but I am all about trying shoot with minimal gear as I shoot mostly when I am backpacking/travelling. The monopod I use folds to 16 inches which is a perfect size (if not too big).

Thanks for the suggestion Ron....

Are you saying your monopod does not have a standard head mount? Which is usually bigger then the camera mount. So the 701HDV will not fit?

I guess it is just a difference in opinion in what a small compact head is. I still think the 701HDV is small and compact, it even has "mini" in its name. Then it is the same as your tripod.

No the monopod has a standard head mount and the 701 HDV will fit. I am saying that my monopod folds to 16 inches and the one he mentioned folds to 21 inches. I also think that the 701HDV is too big for a monopod (in my opinion). The Manfrotto 3229 swivel tilt head is much smaller than the 701HDV and as Ron suggested, adding the same release plate from the 701HDV will work and keep it compact.

Now that I see you're getting the 3229 head (which makes more sense for a typical smaller monopod), you might think about getting the 323 release plate and mounting it to the 701HDV tripod.

This way you won't have to add the larger release plate to the monopod and gain that extra weight. Adapt the tripod to the monopod instead of the other way around, and keep a 200PL plate permanently attached to the camera. It's a much more suitably sized plate for the GH1 anyway. I think it's a little cheaper, too.

Hey Ron, that's exactly what I am going to do. I figure a little extra weight on the tripod is no big deal but I would rather stay light on the monopod. Thanks again for the advice!

No prob. I just got this release plate to go with a Gorillapod Focus (my favorite new toy), and now I think I'm going to get a couple more to add to my monopod and tripod. The plate is perfect for the GH1, because you can actually open the battery compartment fully w/o removing it. And it has the built-in flip-out tightening mechanism which is always a plus.

Ya, I use the tightening mechanism as a clip for my shoulder strap when I am walking around; it is perfect! Do you find you can get a smooth pan with the Focus?

I just got it and have mostly used it as a brace for handheld work. Others on this board had recommended using it this way, and I must say it is pretty great. You can put one or two legs over your shoulder or bend them to press against your chest. The third leg is in front of the camera and acts as a grip. It's so flexible and can be used many ways. But I haven't tried using it as a tabletop tripod per se, so I don't know about smooth pans. I wouldn't expect much along those lines, though.

Ya, I wouldn't have thought so. It's just that I looked at a picture on their site and they had a pan head on it so I was just wondering. Great to know that it works as a stabilizer, I'll have to give that a try.

I have been using a cheap generic $10 table tripod with the legs extended. I lay the legs on my right shoulder and put the viewfinder up to my eye. I find it works wonders and I can focus on the fly and it really cheap! Plus the tripod is tiny and fits in a pocket.

Not sure what I was thinking...you can't pan with the Focus and the 323 plate! You would need a panhead. They sell little ballheads to go on the Gorillapod, but I can't speak to their effectiveness.

BTW Ron, I picked up the Manfrotto 560B today. I LOVE it! It is amazing and everything that I want in a monopod, except it unfortunately doesn't fit in my backpack :(

I wish I could temporarily take one of the legs off so it would fit.

Thanks for the suggestion!
