A matter of time... Panasonic FZ1000 - 4k for USD 897!

The recording time is probably only a restriction for the EU version. It might also be due to the risk of overheating. Again: if you want unrestricted recording time, get a camcorder...

More serious is the exclusion of 24p. the camera's certainly capable, looks like they don't want to cannibalize the GH4 market.

Looking at the frame rates, this must share some tech with the Gh4 - 120fps @ 1080? 240 @ 720? Pretty cool.

Assuming we're talking standard SD cards, so the #1 question (for those who can live without 24p) is codec & compression.

"The ability to record 4K QFHD video at 30p is this camera’s shining feature. There is only a handful of cameras with the capability to shoot 4K, and fewer that can record it directly on an SD card. The FZ1000’s 3840 x 2160 resolution also provides a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, making it perfect for display on a television or monitor you likely already have in your home. Video capabilities also include full HD capture at 1920 x 1080p with 60, 30, and high-speed 120 fps. Also, at 1280 x 720 resolution, high speed video is supported at up to 240 fps. There is also standard-definition 640 x 480 recording at blazing-fast speeds of 360 fps."

360 fps... Low res or not, that's pretty neat for a consumer camera!

I need a new stills cam, but more and more I just want to wait and see if I can truly get the best of both worlds in a product like the GH4.

I'll likely rent a GH4 and see how I like the look. STILL nobody making what I'd consider a basic, I-own-it-vs-rent-it, "artsy" (vs. events) camera.

APS-C or super-35 sensor;
60p @ 1080;
Shoots Prores or outputs actual high-bit via HDMI or SDI;
Color, moire, jello & sharpness at least as good as current Nikon (D7100,5300);
Manual audio, quality doesn't matter, just for synch;
Under $2k or so.

If any of the BMC cams did 60p I'd already own one. The GH4 does most of the above, MORE than the above & has real 10-bit out, but smaller sensor, and many Red & BMC owners have disliked theirs when they got it as a b-cam. Others like the look a lot. Tests I've seen haven't swayed me, but they'll be easy to rent for a weekend soon.

I rented a Nikon 5300 which did great 1080-60, but it wasn't as feature-packed as my 7100. I can't imagine the 7100 replacement won't have 1080/60... if they'd give us higher bits out from HDMI, I could be a really happy camper.

does the fz1000 have a parfocal lens?

i googled the heck out of it, can't find an answer.

It seems that all the articles written here in NY USA says that the camera does have a rec limit time 29:59 sec.
BH Photo article says it too on the specs. And I was led to believe it was only the EU version due to that tax that imposed that time limit,
So far no one can give me a straight answer, not even camera salespeople, if the FZ1000 bought here in the USA has a rec time limit or not. Please show me an article/review that does indeed allow the camera to record over that time limit on the US version.
