A Guide To Setting Your GH1/GH2 Up For Video

2. Next, on record quality, select the quality you want. FHD is 1080 and SH is 720. These are likely the only too options you will ever need to use. Be aware that shooting FHD requires the removal of pulldown in post, there are many other threads on this.

A bit confused here. Does FHD 1080 in the PAL version requires the removal of pulldown in post? I have the impression that this is a clean 1080p 25fps and the SH - 720p is 50fps.

No pulldown removal required for PAL as it's 25p in a 50i stream. I just output to 25 fps when transcoding. I should added one more thing there like this

Be aware that shooting FHD with NTSC models requires the removal of pulldown in post, there are many other threads on this.

I think this would be good as a sticky... some people get the camera and would love a page like this to get going rather than the overwhelming feeling of searching for tidbits scattered haphazardly in the manual. Title it "general steps / guidelines for camera newbies to start shooting video with gh1"

Of course this is a general guide, learn your camera and season to taste, but this would help people starting out.

I might go through the original post and slim things down so it's more simple facts.

(set your camera to M exposure mode, etc.)

That or JDS or someone could rewrite this and sticky it.

My main reason for wanting this as a sticky is so people will stop going "how do I set shutter speed in video it won't let me." Because we get that a lot.

Or how about we do a new FAQ to replace the old temp one? Dividing it into prospective buyers and new owners might be helpful. Plus we could explain crop factor to the people that still don't get it.

Huge vote to make this a Sticky. There's a quickly growing community of new GH1 users, and this should cut down on a large number of repeated posts.

Thanks Guys for this very helpful thread and all the great links. I have been trawling these forums for months before buying my camera and have only been shooting on my new hacked GH13 for a few weeks, but I'm only now starting to get to know the camera a bit better.

I still learnt a few things from this thread. And I will probably return to it a few times. =)

There is just such a wealth of info out there, it is often overload, and hard to search through. I am only too grateful that someone (experienced) runs though the basics for us noobs and wannabeez.

Thanks! =)

yes
maybe the first poster can add the color profiles to get most flattest image. (some says Nostalgia -2,-2,0 or Smooth -2,0,0,0)
Barry Green posted a profile test, which could be also added to the first post

I don't know if this counts as setting up for video, but I have found it really practical.

DVXUser member mpgxsvcd uses two sets of firmware each on it's own card, one with lpowell's high quality footage and stable in-camera playback patch settings, and another with modulr's near 100% mjpg quality settings minus in-cam playback.

I find this really practical, as you can choose on-the-fly.

I would add one more thing. Keep at least two 16gig cards handy, one for PAL and one for NTSC if - like me(in PAL land) - you want to switch between shooting audio sync(25p) or shooting highest frame rate (60p).

Hope this is helpful and not a tangeant.

You're welcome to post your recommended profiles here...I find that those are somewhat subjective, and I am trying to avoid posting subjective things in the first post.

It might be handy to explain what the Continuous focus setting does in the movie menu and how it interacts with the AFC setting. Most people don't realize that the 20mm can do AFC(slowly) even with the 20mm pancake in video mode.

I never understood this, can someone explain to me what this is and why is it necessary?

GH1 records 24p in a 60i stream. This is, AFAIK, so that it plays back properly when connected to a television set directly from the camera, which consumers might do a lot. But when you load it onto the computer for editing you need to extract the 24p from this 60i stream (reverse telecine) to edit it. Telecine is when films (24p) are converted to be played in 60i on a TV.
