C100: A good run and gun way to mount an Atomos Ninja

I did a shoot last week, a big corporate meeting, using the SD Pix240, I think it was? I had it mounted on a mic stand next to me, recording the output of a laptop, running a Powerpoint slideshow. It worked great. But as we were breaking down, I was laughing at how heavy that thing is, I was joking, "I would never mount this on anything but a big three chip broadcast camera because it is built like a brick and weighs about the same. Love SD products, they are so good but as a camera mounted recorder, I would much prefer the other choices on the market, assuming the Pix-E weighs similar or heavier than the 240?

Definitely was considered on my end, but it's heavier, 40% more expensive (but not overpriced), doesn't do start/stop yet, uses media I don't already have 5 of laying around (adding to my initial expense) and it's signature feature (4k) can't be used by the C100.

totally agree to all of this !
nice product though.

I have to say if the BlackMagic Video Assist ends up with start/stop triggering, it's the clear choice for me with it's use of SD cards, 1080/60p support and small size.

EDIT: It looks like the VA will have start/stop after all...

"Recording is automatically triggered on your Blackmagic Video Assist using your video camera’s start/stop button, so you can remain focused on getting the shot without having to worry about operating additional gear!"

The only thing missing is the auto pulldown from the 60i of the C100.

although, when looking at it, SD cards cost more when buying large capacity. If you want to shoot for a long time, let's say at least 64gb card (but I must say I am very confortable with 256GB SSDs...), SSDs seems to cost less than high capacity SD cards.

How come the Ninja 2 full version is $100 cheaper than the bare bones version? Is the Ninja 2 a good selection for a first generation C100?

@mhood

I imagine that they will be lowering the bare bones package soon as well; probably after they've cleared out their Blade full kit inventory.

The low-resolution Ninja 2 is not particularly useful as a monitor.

Thanks. I'm a one man band and ever since I started using peaking, I've not had any focus problems with the C100's screen so a monitor isn't all that important to me. The Star looks good except for the CF cards...I have a ready supply of SSDs. Does the lack of automatic pull down in the BMD Video Assist eliminate it for use with my C100?

Im wondering how much lower the bare bones version will be? I'm betting it won't be any lower than $400 because the ninja 2 is only $300. With its much better screen, I can't see too many folks opting for the ninja 2 over the blade if they're so close in price.

I'm also betting they're going to have a refresh of the hd recorders soon and are clearing out stock...

Wow!

Hopefully the C100 MKII drops to "compete" with the Sony PXW-FS5 and we'll be able to pick up an awesome HD cam + recorder for a very awesome price. Exciting times.

Canon has a huge hole in their lineup with no 4k cameras besides the aging 1dc under $10k. And the 1dc is most comparable to the Sony, Panasonic and Samsung hybrid 4k cameras; the most expensive of which are 1/2 the price of Canon's offering.

Unless they're happy with the other companies having the "lower end" market with no challenge, they have to do something very soon. 4k 5d mIV?

I haven't gotten a straight answer from BMD that it doesn't have the pull down, but adding an extra step in post would be a deal breaker for me, especially now that Atomos lowered prices. I'm also a 1man band a lot and I'm all about simplifying things these days.

I recognize your name from the BMD forums and there's one thing the Blade does that the VA doesn't that's appealing to BMD shooters and that's all the exposure tools it adds. I believe the VA only does histos...

Not too pleased with this price drop. Was never all that happy with my Ninja, and now it's a) lost next to all resale value and b) will NEVER get that damn guideframe update.

The Blade, though neither have guideframes. Even though they have some kind of overlay (not sure what it's for, probably some broadcast thing), so surely implementing other overlays would be easy.

I've been using Super Talent CFast with mine... $80 for 128GB on Amazon and I've had NO trouble with them.

Hats off to this forum and Adorama in NYC. As a full time pjournalist with a few video gigs per year with Mkiii's, I recognized how much time I could save not having to put files through Compressor. I pulled the trigger an ordered the Atomos Blade in early September for $995. When I followed up with this forum a few weeks later and saw the posting that prices had been slashed 50%, I felt a bit ill. I followed up with Adorama customer service, which was great! They offered me $500 refund in store credit. That's awesome! Now, do I apply that towards a C100 V1, I've had my eye on, or get another Blade for a second MKIII?

Hey man that's awesome! I bought mine only a month ago too from an Australian retailer VideoGuys and wondering if I potentially could do a similar thing. What'd you say to get that?

I would certainly contact your seller to see if he can offer any compromises, if not contact Atomos. My purchase was within the 30 day return policy offered by Adorama, one of the larger photo stores. Not sure if I would have bee covered if my purchase was 31 days ago. I'd see what they can do.
