C100: "A few things about the C100"

Thanks, I just ordered that Manfrotto ball head for my ninja from your video. I was looking for a good mounting solution and that seems like it may be the best!

yes, it's the Manfrotto 492LCD ball head with shoe....it's the best/strongest one we have been able to find...

The problem with the eyepiece.
A huge irritation with the C100 according to most reviews.

How would you get around that?

Some have had luck by ordering a replacement eyecup from SmallHD EVF and attaching it to the eyepiece. I think they're around $10 - probably worth a look.

The AF is contrast detect. I tried it and there is no way you are going to be able to use it for much of anything other than setting marks. I don't see it useful while filming. It hunts a TON and there is no way you are tracking anything even if you hold down the button or press it all you want. So much for the sports or wildlife option. Been with Canon over 25 years and went from film to digital, to DSLR video, then planned to jump into their cinema line, but the c300 seems almost outdated and overpriced compared to what's out there and coming, and the c100 just seems too far behind right out of the gate. A nice image (look) is great, but at what cost and limitation to everything else? I'm going to start thinking more seriously about the FS700. It almost pains me to do so... If the c100 had decent AF *OR* 720p 60p, I'd consider it more seriously, even with the flawed codec. I could even deal with the viewfinder. For now I'm scratching it off the list. I might even pull the pin on the F5. It looks like a better option than the c300.

C100 has a flawed codec?....it's the same as the FS700!...and it has a better chip that goes to much lower light and is cleaner at the higher ISOs..... C300 outdated?....hottest rental camera in town and the rental price has held for 1 year (most camera's rental price starts falling after 6 months). Now the F5 is a very good looking camera but, as a stand alone, the only real thing it has over the C300 is the 120fps. It's at $19-20K(w/viewfinder) where the C300 is at $14K.....

yeah C300/C500 is under pressure since the sony F5 / F55 came out dude.

you have to admit this, especially, F55 can do 4K internally with 128GB SXS card for approx 4 hours (while 1dc just 30mins), how does that sound?

If I have to pay another $5-6K for getting 120 fps in my c300, then I will simply not go for that option. I just need 50 fps at 1080 in my C300. If Canon doesn't give us slowmotion via a firmware update, then I will keep quiet as I have bought this camera knowing that there is no slowmotion. The codec is damn good and I can cut it using a Macbook Pro when I am in the field. I come from a still photography background who used to shoot in slide films. So for me the dynamic range is good enough. I shoot in C-log.

4K option is good to have. However, I haven't got any client (for corporate films) asking me for 4K. I am actually stumped by people asking me for 3D, after the success of life of Pi. For wildlife shooting in 4K for future proofing it can be an option. However, I decided to look at C500 or whatever will be there for next year. At the moment it is too much of pain shooting to external recorders and finding truckloads of hard disks for capture and backup.

If C300 is outdated, then can you find second hand C300s in the market?

Since the Sony is in the market, going by the chatter in these forums, people should be ditching their C300s and going for F5. Frankly speaking I personally had lot of hope about the high ISO ability of the F5 and F55, as these cameras are coming after more than one and half years of the C300 launch. However I can't see any difference in the ISO 16000 and ISO 20,000 (based on posts in vimeo).

Okay. Perhaps flawed was the wrong word. I realize that the FS700 has the same codec, but I believe it's also 10 bit, and if I MUST use AVCHD, then having the slow motion, which is actually still very nice at 240 and in some cases, even the higher modes are useable and nice to have, makes the FS700 a very attractive camera. Both can record to an extrenal drive as far as I'm aware, and I can also buy the 4k recorder for the FS700. Can I do that with the c100? Not possible.

Also, if you compare prices, the F5 isn't all that bad considering what you get compared to the c300. Use an Alphatron display and an aftermarket monitor to keep the costs down. You can still record internally at much higher res and bit rates without the 4k recorder. It's got a lot more going for it than the c300 as far as I'm concerned. The c500, meh. Without some serious firmware updates on the c100 and c300, I think their sales will suffer. I agree the c300 is popular now, but I wonder how many people coming into the new market are going to choose the c300 over the F5 now? Certainly those who already have a c100 or c300 might buy one to integrate as a bCam, but straight up purchases? I bet many who were considering the c100 or c300 are looking at the FS700 and F5 very seriously. Both have a great upgrade path.

I think many c300 owners will sell their Canons and buy the F5. In fact, I think it's happening already.

Shawnvfx.......Dude? really? I was answering/clarifying the direct statements that Sheldon made. If you read his post and then mine, you'll see it was about the C100,FS700,C300, and the F5.....nothing about the F55 or the 1DC. As for pressure, the C300 continues to sell well ($2000 instant rebate & 0% finance available) and again, the hottest rental in town. Yes, I think the C500 sales have been effected by 1) RED dropping their prices and 2) Sony's F5/F55 announcement together had put some hesitation in the marketplace but that changed now. Sonys are being ordered and C500s are moving....and an interesting note on that, we've had people buying the C500s with the idea using them now as a C300, being future-proofed, and renting the Gemini or Codex unit when 4K is needed.

We're in a similar situation, and I agree with most of what you said. Believe me, if the c300 had at least 1080/50p, then that might change things. If the c100 had even 720/60p, that would be better. I probably won't use 4K for a while, but it's nice to have vs. the Canons that don't. As for the F5, the internal recording is much higher resolution than Canon c300 without the external recorder as far as I'm aware. Believe me, I want to stay with canon, but it's not making sense for me now. That slow motion is slick, and for my type of wildlife filming, having slow motion is a big deal. I wouldn't choose the FS700 over the c300, but at its price point compared to the c100, it comes with a great viewfinder and the slow motion capability is amazing.

Is it possible to assign a button to quickly activate slow motion on the c300 like on the FS700 or F5? Sometimes we get very little time to react to a situation that would look great in slow motion.

Take a look at this. 480 FPS with the FS700. 240 will be much sharper. 120 will be even sharper, but view this at 1080, then watch the footage in reverse in the second half, then tell me that this would not be super useful, especially for wildlife.

240 FPS

Weird stuff, as far as I'm concerned the c300 doesn't really do many things wrong, and the f5 is a really different look. Comparing soley just specs is not practical. Plus the f5 is for people that want a lot of options, c300s are for people who want great quality in the quickest easiest package, sounds like different markets and styles to me, I'm pretty sure they can co-exist.

Why don't you buy an FS700? What in the world is the purpose of this sidetracked discussion on this thread?

Pretty spot on, RZE.
