ok so. i film in regular 60i mode, capture presets are HD 960x720 (16:9) in final cut pro. it exports fine and everything, i open it in quicktime and click the de-interlace video source button, the size after exporting is 853x480 custom preset in quicktime pro. although it doesnt look bad when in motion. when i pause the clip you can still see the interlacing. the quality of the video also looks super soft ( both vdetial and reg detail levels are at 0 in the sceen file) and it just makes the footage look really dull. ill host the clip up here in a short bit so everyone can see what im talking about. i really would like some advice from you guys on what i can do in camera and in post to get the best quality out of my DVX.

update: heres the clip. i recompressed it in sorenson and it looks better when its smaller. i still would like some critique on the quality of the video. ANY help at all would be great.

First off, capture at the native resolution, that will help. Second, why are you shooting 60i if you shoot skate boarding? I should think you would opt for 24p or 30p, since it isnt interlaced in the first place. unless your not using the DVX...

no im using a dvx. 24p with a super high shutter? i dont know why but its frowned upon in the skateboarding world to shoot with 24p and a slow shutter to get that "film look".

and what is "native resolution"? and how do i capture at those settings in final cut pro

Wait... why are you capturing HD 960x720 (16:9)???

Frowned upon? There's PLENTY of skate videos around here that are shot in 24 or 30 p. I'm not a skater, but I'd probably go 30P to avoid too much strobing during fast pans.

Whatever... are you shooting squeeze for the 16:9?

If not. Shoot your 60i footage. Open Final Cut and go to the final cut menu> scroll to "easy setup"> choose DV NTSC> now all your NEW sequences are setup for your footage. Quick fukking with things in there ;)

Edit, do whatever you want for de-interlacing, export, done.

nope i shoot normal 4:3. i dont know why i was capture in hd 16:9. i was just messing around with settings trying to figure things out myself. i will give 30p a try with a higher shutter. thanks for all the help =)

24p can look fine with higher shutter... not in the 500plus range (thats my opinion), but it looks fine at 60 or even a bit higher.
