F35: A few questions from a new owner

You might be able to order this part through the sony parts/service site, I have bought the other side attempting to make my own power plate. I have taken apart both sides of the dock, it's not very hard.

It is also normal for the top dock not to have the power connection, only the back dock.

You can live without this connection however. The 4 pin of the IF box is what connects to this port. The IF box will still work fine for Dual Link the power isn't needed to power the IF box, it only sends it into the camera. Buy the Abelcine F65/35 plate with the main power lemo connector. I believe it is safer to use the main designed for power and also you have the benefit of the aux power outputs on the side of the camera working.

That's what I was hoping someone would say, thank you! I'm currently powering through a Bauer gold mount plate on the back. While I was hoping to have the option of AC powering the head through the IF, it's a minor thing. Cheers, yachacha.

So the second camera connector port on both the top and back of my F35 look to be hosed.
The top one had a protective plate attached to it and when removed it revealed a hollow gap. The back one is missing half the pins. (see pics)
The manual says the second camera port is to transmit/receive power. Is it safe to say I won't be able to use an IF here unless this head and its connector ports are serviced?

I don't have the camera or service manual in front of me, however - what you're describing and showing in the photograph is by design, and is how the dock is supposed to appear.

The smaller connection for the dock is to supply unregulated 12volt power to the camera. It only uses half the pins, the others are not present on the male connector by design.

The camera, by design, only permits 12volt power to be supplied via the 8pin lemo port, and the rear dock. The top dock is capable of doing data and video I/O - it will not accept incoming 12volt power.

This is all by design.

If you already have an 8 pin Anton Baur gold mount, try getting a Tandem 150.
It can power the F35 through AC, while being a super portable option ... there's currently one on Ebay/Adorama for a good price.

That is really terrific, Vid. I did not find mention of pin count in the manual, only that the second cam/connector was for transmitting and receiving power. I've been testing the IF on the top and sure enough it sends video out fine. It's great to know it can pass power to the head on the back through the half set of male pins. The domain knowledge on this board never ceases to impress.

Thanks for the tip, FS...that is real tempting.

New owner question here as well, I got a F35 that came with a Nikon mount. A Nikon lens is attached and at f2.8, but there is no picture in the viewfinder (no the lens cap isn't on) shining a light in the lens produces a dim blue color. Removing the lens produces a desaturated brownish green color in the viewfinder. What am I doing wrong here?

New guy advice, but for what it's worth: I'd try running SDI from one of the monitor ports to see if you get the same result as the viewfinder. If so, then maybe the flange adjustment is out of whack (or just a bad Nikon conversion)?

If it's an F35 with a Nikon mount, the owner is probably a current or former resident of this list. Track them down.

Find another viewfinder to check it isn't a VF issue if the SDI out produces an OK picture.

The viewfinder appears to be working correctly from what I can tell as the menu screen pulls up and is working. I am waiting on the Odyssey 7Q+ I ordered (arrives friday) from there I will be able to tell for sure if it is the monitor

The Nikon mount is an adapter the original PL is attached. The seller claims to have an account on DVXuser but says he has never posted, I checked for his username and it does not exist.
Viewfinders are pretty straightforward, and light is coming into the camera through the lens as a dim blue light when shining a flashlight through. Is there anything else, settings etc. you can think of that would cause it to be so dark no picture would be displayed?

What do you see with a lens off? It's not possible to adapt from Nikon > PL as far as I know. Not without seriously modifying the camera.

I saw an adapter the other day that will, maybe even here. It is a 1.4x extender that will adapt from PL to Nikon AFAIK.

With lens off there is a desaturated greenish brown color that shows up in the viewfinder. The cam came with a Nikon 80-200 F2.8 D autofocus lens (which should be manual only with the adapter) I have no idea if it can be adapted, I have heard from some it cam and some it can't

I'd try a PL lens on the head directly to at least remove the Nikon variable.
Also, are you at 0db gain? Maybe you received the cam with negative gain set (pretty sure you can do that?).
A factory reset is probably in order.

Thanks for the troubleshooting help guys, I'm getting it all checked out within the hour by a Sony pro. tech

Thanks for all the help! Ok! here's the deal, the problem WAS THE NIKON ADAPTER, threw some PL glass on it and it was like magic! It was a very emotional moment I almost cried (not really).
We should settle this once and for all, because there seems to still be a question as to whether or not a Nikon can be adapted to PL (I not sure myself as the cam was sold with a Nikon lens and adapter)
I'm still pondering the logic of why the seller would sell it that way if it doesn't work? Does he know it doesn't work? Is he expecting it to get returned? What do octopuses dream about?
I'm interested to know dhessel do you have a link for the adapter you saw that will work? if so, has anyone tried it?
