a DSLR made to look like a shoulder-mounted video camera

Interesting.

There was someone around here a while back who had posted about adapting the EVF from an old Sony broadcast camera for use with DSLR. Looks like this guy took it 1 step further and adapted the whole camera body.

Honestly, that's a pretty ingenious idea for some one who probably comes from a long, personal history of shooting with a shoulder-mount ENG package. Think about it: you can spend $1k on a shoulder rig that isn't properly weighted. Or, you can buy an old BetacamSP package "for parts/repair" for peanuts on ebay (roughly the same price as some of the cheap-o Indian and Chinese knock-off DSLR rigs, perhaps even less)... doesn't matter if everything else in it is shot, as long as the EVF works. A little DIY mojo and you have a properly-balanced shoulder mount rig for your camera, along with a very comfortable viewfinder.

I have an old Hi8 camera in the back. Could wire up the XLR inputs through a preamp into the camera, and then a field monitor like in the video and use a 2.5inch lcd as an EVF. lots of possibilities for this type of project.

This is a really nice camera. I am thinking that the attachment is a microphone. My guess is that it is retrofit, and probably records to an external digital voice recorder. I was actually thinking about doing something similar, so that it would make it easier to mix and master my audio tracks. Do you think I would be able to get some of the gear like the video camera, or the voice recorder from hhgregg? I'm going for more of a economy version, not looking to spend big bucks, any advice?

I would be curious about the 'torque' you are applying to the DLSR end trying to horse this much weight around...can't be good.
