a dilemma :/

Till a couple of days ago I owned a canon 5D2. I mostly do video stuff (let's say 98% of the time). Sometimes I go out and take some photos but as I said, I'm mostly a video guy.

So at the moment I have no camera but I do have the next lenses:

- Canon 24-70mm 2.8
- Canon 16-35mm 2.8 mk1
- Canon 100mm L 2.8
- Sigma 70-200 OS (the latest one).

Me and a couple of friends are a group of people who do projects together. So I have acess to:

- 1 canon 5D2 body
- Samyang (Ronkin) 35mm 1.4 manual lens
- Sigma 50mm 1.4
- Samyang (Ronkin) 14mm 2.8
- Sony nex-5n (nice little video camera).

Now here the dilemma kicks in.

Since I just sold my 5d2 I have about (not that I'm not from the USA and that in Europe we have different prices for gear) 1500 usd left from the 5D2.

As I said I mostly do video I started to look around and now I cannot decide:

option a)

Buy another 5D2 and just keep all the gear I have (a couple of tripods, monpods, motorized slider, jib, etc..) and maybe buy a wireless follow focus and electronic head for the jib

option b)

Sell all my lenses + the money I got from my 5D2 and get a new/used (hard to find a used fs100 in europe) FS100 with kit lens. Buy an adapter and I can use the lenses from our group members (14mm 2.8, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4 and the 100L macro as one of the members said he'll buy it off me if I decide to sell). If I sell everything (lenses that is, I'm keeping all the other gear for now) I have jsut enough for a FS100 with a kit lens.

option c)

Sell everything and add about 3000 USD (which I don't really have at the moment so a loan most probably) and get the new FS700...

I have to say that so far the income from our video work is not that great and the loan would probably take a full year to return in not a couple of months more.

So what would you people do? :)

I really like the FS100 but the 240fps and the ND filter of the FS700 makes me want it more hahah :)

I would say that a used FS100 is probably your best option. I have shot with almost every camera on the market right now and I really despise shooting on DSLR now...
With the AF100 and (better yet) the FS100 being so cheap, there is no reason to shoot on DSLR. The resolution of the FS100 is incredible vs DSLRs (expect perhaps the GH2 hacked)

The only things you need to watch for is the highlight handling. Just be careful.

were you happy with the 5D2? if so, why did you sell it?

Well I can get a AF102 (I browsed the internet and it seems they are all the same - AF100, 101, 102, 105 - the number represents for which continent it was made??) for a lot less (let's say for half the price of a used FS100 with lens) but without any lenses.. But the more I look the more I see FS100 videos online and not really much of the Panny...?

I sold the 5D2 since it was overheating too much (it seems I got a bad copy since the other 5D2 we have works like a charm).

Just buy the Sony and use the Metabones EOS to NEX electronic adaptor for you Canon lenses. I would try to keep you Canon lenses as they make good lenses and the value holds more than Sony lenses.

Getting a FS100 and only having the kit lens would be tough, especially since it's not exactly a fast lens at all.

Personally, I would just try to spend a bit more money up front because from my experience, when you try to skim too much at the beginning of a new camera package, you usually end up buying twice and spending way more money in the long run.

Or wait till the 700 hits the streets because there will be a flood of FS100s, maybe - or will we keep as a B cam ?

If your income stream is not as strong as you'd like, a new camera likely isn't going to change that. And taking out any kind of loan for gear without an income stream to pay it off is, not to mince words, moronic. If you have ready access to a friend's 5DII, use that when you can. If you can't, don't be afraid to rent a camera when you have a job that can afford the rental. But sinking a lot of money into gear with no real way of paying it off is digging a hole that you'll likely have a hard time climbing out of.

You've got some great lenses, and plenty of support gear. Do you have any need for sound gear? You didn't mention that, but a small investment in good sound gear can make a big difference in the quality of your work.

Again, if you don't have jobs bringing in income to support purchasing gear, do the best you can with what you have, what you can borrow, or what you can rent on a job by job basis. Save your money, and then buy what you want without having to sacrifice some of your existing gear "assets" to do it.

It's great advice, and I would suggest you to listen to it.

>Well I can get a AF102 for a lot less
The AF102 is made for the Australasia market; if you buy one through an 'importer' (e.g. SLRHut or
Simply Electronics) for use outside this market its warranty will be invalid.

From http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/archive/index.php/t-266055.html?
"AF102 looks like a significantly reduced price point to the 100/101"
"warranty is in the country it was originally shipped to, and in this case Australia."

I'm a little struck how some of y'all react to the market cycle.

New Camera announcement hoopla = I must have it.

Why?

Just ask why.

Think before repeating cliches

Because I must have at least 90% of my you tube channel at 4K and 240 FPS. (preferably at 8k, cause thats twice as much as 4K) The skate board video and the video of my cat chasing the laser pointer just looks so good at those settings.

The Metabones Ef to E is $400. The OP is obviously on a budget, perhaps you can recommend Fotodios instead?

tnx guys :D

Got a great price on a FS100 from my own town, will probably take that :)

I would go FS700. You will get more jobs because of the 240fps more than anything else. Just depends on the type of work you do but if it's weddings or music videos, the fs700 will out shine any dslr and even the fs100 which will be cheap enough that your competitors will own. Even though it's the skills more than the cam but to a client, they will look at what camera you have first. IMAGE is everything (it instills confidence in the client ).
