A Day in Los Angeles with my new 7D and other thoughts

A 4GB card will fill up in 12 minutes anyway. So you need to stop and change cards. I don't think it is a big deal to stop and give the person a break. I wouldn't want someone talking for 12 minutes none stop anyway!!

Jsauce,

Yeah they would be shorter type of interviews that get to the point. I specialize in web video/media so the stuff would be almost scripted etc. I'm just saying what happens if I do do a long interview one day, I know I'd have the 12 min recording length limit, but I still think it would be able to do a longer interview?

Regarding your comment on getting the color setup just right on the 7D and using a 'cine-gamma' setting, there is a great tutorial on how to properly setup your Canon's image settings on Philip Bloom's new DVD training on the 5DII...

http://www.learntocreatethefilmlook.com/learn-canon-5dmkii-cinematograph/

THIS DVD IS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD. Bloom is working on a follow up version for the 7D, however 95% of the 5D DVD also pertains to the 7D. If you buy the 5D DVD now you get free access to the 7D sections that are different via video on his website. I recommend this video for ALL users of the 7D/5D- whether you're a pro or not.

hey croma sorry for the lag in response
thanks for the feedback.
I used 60p for overcrank, 24 for non. and I tried to keep the shutter speed to 1/60th and below. I shot everything manual (as i always do regardless of the camera) and i found the focus pulls relatively easy. processing, i converted to apple pro res hq using quicktime, then straight into final cut.

Absolutely gorgeous. I thought the colours looked exquisite. Especially the Quicktime on your own site (H264?). And considering it was your first few days with the camera I have to say I'm very impressed.

On a settings note, was this all shot on manual (including manual focus)? What general shutter speed, etc. And 24P? And would it be possible to say how you processed the footage in and out? Phew...

Of course, ignore all these questions if you're busy. Either way, a superb beginning. Thank you.

*Just read back and seen that you've answered some of these questions.

hey david-- for the most part i think the basketball stuff was shot at 2000 ISO, 60p with 1/60th shutter (the lowest it will let you go). my aperture was set at 2.8, all the way open. i dont have a light meter and couldn't track it that way.

thanks to the rest of you guys for blooms links on settings. very helpful. i spent half the day with a friend trying to dial in the settings and was able to correct a lot. lowering contrast/sharpness is a big help.

Holy cow, that is some very impressive footage. Yeah, the color is better on the .mov on your site than on the Vimo clip. I think they look fine also, and are actually a tad bit saturated for my tastes. That is a personal thang though.

I have not been following the threads on these new DSLR cams much and have just stumbled into the stuff showing up from the 7D. I have been impressed with what I have seen.

I was just wondering if you kept track of ISO/ASA settings, F/T stop settings, and light levels (key light footcandles) you were working with for each shot? I am especially interested the basketball sequence at the end. What ISO/ASA settings were you at? What F/T stop were you shooting at and did you document the light level of the available light? Also, does this camera have any shutter angle adjustment?

last thing about the colors topic--- yesterday I went out bought a 3stop ND filter and a polarizer. I tested the results in daylight situations with and without and apart from simply now having the ability to shoot wide open and get compressed DOF the COLORS look much much better as do the highlights, etc...blue skies are blue, hot spots are more managable etc...a huge difference maker and i reccomend buying these filters.

What lenses did you use? That's the one thing bugging me about this camera is the 1.6 crop factor. You had a couple of wide shots, so I'm interested in what you used for them.

im about to buy a few primes but as of right now the only lens i own/used was the efs 17-55mm 2.8. so at 17 i think its about 28
