A couple questions

1) I know that the iris and focus are manual on RED. Does this mean the only way to control the two will be the rings on the lens? Or will there be a way to control them from the camera / remote?

2) What kind of horizontal and vertical FOV can be expected from the RED zoom lens at 18mm?

1) There are remote focus/iris controls on the market. Unfortunately, I've seen some crest the price of the RED ONE itself. I'm hoping they release a viable alternative... someday.

2) The standard FOV from an 18mm lens in super 35mm. There are probably calculators online.

There are remote focus/iris controls available, but I think it needs to be made clear that they aren't some handle you snap on to a tripod and plug into an 1/8" port on the camera (ala most DV cams). The only way to change focus/iris on a manual lens (which is what RED uses) is by physically changing the focus/iris on the lens itself; that means you need a gear and a motor attached to the lens, which can bring up a whole new set of obstables. Granted, the good ones are great - and even the "low end" Bartech system worked flawlessly for me the last time I used it, but that one will set you back about $4,000 minimum and only controlled the focus. So, yes, "remote" systems are available, but it may be in a different form than you were anticipating.

Ah, thanks for clarifying for me - I can see how my post could be misinterpreted. I've used the BFD before and had great success with it. It's a clean little system that works well for handheld and steadicam work. I've played with Arri's system as well, though not in a shooting environment. I like the digital readouts and the way it fits my hand... but I don't like the price.

I found one calculator and it was saying I would get a horizontal FOV of 68.26 on red at 18mm. Does that sound right? I thought it would be much wider.

Sounds about right for an 18mm lens on a S35 plane. An 18mm lens will serve you well - most don't go much wider very often.

Consider that the widest rectilinear lens [read: that I'm aware of] for super 35mm is 8mm for a ~113 degree FOV. That said, the 8mm is more of a specialty lens for specialty shots.

Ok, thanks. For some reason I thought I was going to get something very wide, like 120 degrees. I heard that 35mm gives a much better FOV then smaller sensors, but I have seen wide angle adaptors for very smaller sensor that give 90-180 degrees. I guess I can get a wide angle lens for RED also? Maybe a wide angle prime?

Most of those adapters are fisheye, however, which distort the image in all directions.

I'm trying to see what I can shoot inside tight quarters. It has always been an issue pulling the camera back far enough to get a good shots. I would like a FOV close to human vision.

 Ditto. It rents for about $300/day. I spent about a half hour running around with it at NAB... It's good enough that I'd plan shots or sequences around the lens... just to see it in a new way.

What in the manufacturing process make a good lens so expensive? It is basically some glass and metal. How does it hit $20K+

Just curious how much is it to purchase the 8R lens. I can't find the price anywhere. Does anyone else sell something similar, but more affordable?

We're working on a full motion control lens system that will be priced around $5500. It will include 3 motors, communications box, cables, gears, and wireless remote. The system can be interfaced to a pda or computer and can store 100's of presets. We will have more info available in Janurary.

I would be very interested Curt. Glad to hear the update. I will be saving my lunch money!

Please PM me with an e-mail address for further info.

Cheers

Looks quite promising.
