A Case for the AF100

I've checked in my RED everytime I fly with it and never had any problems. If a camera can't handle being thrown around like luggage in a padded case then I wouldn't want the camera. As for the potential for it not showing up at the destination, I think that is a very slim chance, and I've never had any problems.

I used to check or ship equipment all the time with no worries - then about three years ago our insurance carrier wouldn't insure unless we hand carry the cam in the cabin. Looked at other carriers and that clause was present with them as well - Or we could pay 2-3x extra and still check / ship… Been hand carrying the HVX ever since on most flights, then paying an extra on jobs where we ship an ARRI.

I've never thought of checking camera gear from a safety perspective as much as I have from a professional perspective.

As an EFP guy I always have the camera, batteries and mics with me on the plane. That way, if I show up somewhere and my luggage doesn't I can always do my job right away. In remote locations you can make tripods etc, but you can't find cameras or AB batteries or wireless mics.

exactly my thinking. I always carry the cam with some cards/tapes and 2 batteries. that will allow me to wait for the rest of the gear if soemthing really goes wrong.

But this case is not a shoulder bag case it is a back pack. I would not want to do a shoulder case with all the lenses and stuff that is why the hard shell case has wheels. I wouldn't want to be the sherpa. And as far as the strength of the case, I would put it up against the pelican, although thinner and a little more flexible, it is equally as strong.

Awesome! It's the packer case with backpack straps?? I was confused and thought it was one big shoulder bag and the separate backpack... also putting wheels on the resin case, AMAZING idea, makes it viable for one-man/woman-band stuff. So helpful!

Everything about the build quality of the portabrace was outstanding, just the weight on one shoulder that then has to take a shouldermount rig made it impractical. Great improvements here, thank you!

This is the same bag I use for traveling with my HVX and mattebox. Fits on the plane with no problems. That said, I also travel with my larger rolling case full of all the other gear. I have the Lowepro rolling case for that. For me it makes sense to carry essentials as carry on and the hardware in the bigger bag. Once I get to the hotel, I consolidate to one bag. That said, I think Jan did a great job for putting this case together. It's versatile - hard shell or lighter case with backpack. You can even get rollers. Seems like a winner to me.

I often used a smaller version of this bag sold by 16x9 that carried my HVX/mattebox,rods,plate/Aks that was roomier than it looked.
This larger version should work quiete well for the AF100 w/most lenses&mattebox,FF attached. Extra Lenses can be stored in the back padded compartment which can be configured however you like.
This is a good choice for run/gun, carry on luggage. Not too heavy but carries the essentials. Don't ever check this Bag on a plane though.

Jan,

Will this case be a Panasonic product or a Portabrace product? Just want to know from whom to order it.

It will be a Panasonic offering. Hope to have full details to the dealers soon. You could buy the original Portabrace case from Portabrace and it will likely follow the same pricing but the cinfiguration may be different and the supplied accessories would be different. The Pansonic will be the black and blue interior soft case.

Best,
Jan

I think it is the 2750. Cant be sure till Monday as I am at home and it is at work. But I am pretty sure as I recall checking when someone mentioned above that they thought it was the 2550. I should have posted when I checked but then someone or something else decided to interrupt that train of thought.

Monday for sure,

Jan

Hey Jan,

If it is the 2750 that *could* be great as I already have a 2750 I was planning on using with foam cutouts, the "could" relates to purchasing options. From the pictures it looks like there are three main components. The hard (hopefully 2750) case, the inner case and the laptop backpack case. Do you know if I would be able to purchase the inner case and laptop case separate from the hard case? Thanks for setting this all up by the way.

*Already answered by further reading.

Found this interior case http://portabrace.com/productA-PB-2750ICO for the 2750 and will be buying the laptop case separate if it works.

I've been using Pelican cases, but I look forward in seeing what you've come up with.

I've been using the Pelican 1610. Love the idea of the Pick-n-pack foam to arrange perfectly for what I'll be using.

Just as a side note, the local Pelican distributor where I am from said once I got the pick-and-pack just right that I can bring it in and they'll make a permanent custom cut insert for me for about $30-$40. Which is NOT bad. The size of that case looks great, I will inquire with them about one. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know you could do that. Does anyone know of a place in the Los Angeles area that does that?
