A-cam dII 'High Definition RAW Format Motion Picture Camera

Look at the absurdly high storage rates for the ikonoskop. That'd be one pain in the ass in feature territory.

The F23 is a league unto it's own. All those cameras are. They are digital cinema cameras for a reason. They cost 180,000 body alone for a reason. They shot Cloverfield, the first Starwars prequel, they've been Panavised for a reason.

An F23 next to an HVX is not only a stupid comparison but a laughable one. If these camera manufactures and industry professionals wanted to use DVX's - they would.

An F23 gives you massive amounts of flexibility. There is more dynamic range then you could possibly imagine, you have full and utter control over the unit.

The scarlet is not (in my book) a digital cinema unit. The RED ONE is. This camera is geared for digital cinema. There is no stopping someone from taking a SONY handicam and shooting a feature. In fact - good for them. I would not. I like full control over my units. I like being able to dial in an overall look in camera. Get the look I want right there. I like the total control over shutter speeds, gamma, frame rates, and a vast majority of other options.

There is a reason hollywood uses Pro units and not cameras that are in the consumer realm. The Varicams and CIneAltas are used in the pro realm because of their control. The scarlet will never be used that way. Wether it is cheaper or not. Money isn't the only reason for choosing which camera to use.

EDIT:

I am not going to get in a camera argument. Different cameras for different people. Really not much else to say.

Point me to one 2/3" consumer cam. I'd buy it!

Also, what control do you have with Red One? Those are the benefits of post production and RAW. Have you seen the trailer for "Happening?"

The F900, the F950 are both Cinealta cameras. In fact - the F900 spawned the term Digital Cinema camera. The F23 is the older brother of the F900 series. And a lot of changes have been made. The F900 was Panavised - as many CineAlta's are. The Genesis is a cinealta creation. Till CineAlta made the F35, which is the Genesis with adjustments.

Have you shot with the RED ONE or just read about it?

The RED gives you the control of RAW camera processing. The camera is an affordable digital cinema unit. 35mm DOF with a 35mm sized sensor. The imaging capabilities are impressive at the very least. Very good low light performance though finicky with the firm ware.

The Happening wasn't shot with a digital camera unit. In fact it was shot 35mm with a DI done. So what that has to do with anything is beyond me.

I've used the RED, I've used the F900, I've used the F950, I'm demoing the F23 and the F35. I'm not just talking out of my ass here.

I'm pretty sure this is what he was talking about matt

I would also not call red very good in low light.
I would say it's very good in lowlight when viewed at low res :)
I generally rate it at 500 asa.

One thing that makes me very nervous about these small 1 chip cameras is the speed and noise of the sensors.

The scarlet is priced and made to be more of a home movies camera than a video camera. does that mean it can't be used on cinema projects? No. People use whatever medium they have to/ want to, to tell the story.

Knowing is - as far as I know indeed shot 100% RED 4K.

Yet - I never questioned RED's ability as a camera...

So far the specs I've seen for Scarlet are exactly the same at the RED ONE, except for 3K, 2/3" chip (again, almost identical to S16 size) and Fixed lens. Scarlet can even shoot 180fps instead of RED's 120.

I should probably say that I'm a RED ONE owner so I may have a bias.

I see this camera for people who REALLY want interchangeable 16mm lenses and UNcompressed RAW. For everyone else, Scarlet is a 3rd of the price. And it's also true that Scarlet isn't available which is a valid point, although until it ships, no one knows when this camera will be available either.

And Mattykins, no worries, feel free to participate in the discussion or not, there's no hard feelings here. We're just having fun talkin' shop :)

(and yes, I'm sure he meant to say "Knowing", not Happening")

I have seen the Ikonoskop DII yesterday at IBC.
This little camera instantly healed me from buying a SI-2K. I saw some raw footage and there is no noise in the picture. Not even in the darkest parts. Simply put: It was within the best footage I've ever seen. Period. I just made a preorder for this camera. As for me, Scarlet can go back to Rhett.

This camera is good enough for music-videos, shorts and indie feature films. And it's raw, so that means you can use the data immediately in every application from photoshop to fcp to avid.

... and it runs off normal Sony DV-Camera batteries!

This cam seems to be exciting. But I don't understand why they didn't put any footage on their website. And they took off the footages of their regular 16mm cam. If I was making an impressive product i would show the result to my potential customers for sure. Even just some grabs .....

They said that the footage they show was shot the night before IBC while driving there!
I'm sure you'll see footage soon and trust me, you will be blown away.

Just having 12bit S16 Global CCD sensor is a killer deal for me + interchangeable lens make it a serious Scarlet Stalker/Killer. This camera also uses ordinary cheapo sony battery system and It is small enough to be sneaked into places where you have no permits to shoot (heheheh). Not to mention, you dont have to buy a $7000 Oconnor tripod system and you can use your Nikon, Zeiss SLR lenses or cheapo 16mm pl mount lenses off ebay.

Imagine how much Panasonic wants for their full HD rasta 10 bit 2/3" hpx3700 Varicam II. Heck, the hpx500 with up rez resolution, 8 bit DVCPRO HD, is US$8000 body alone after rebate. AVCINTRA BOARD upgrade is $3 -$4k for the hpx2000. I hope with the advancement in technology and the push by small aggressive SKUNK WORKS companies, it will the beginning of the end for 1/3", 1/4", 1/2" sized prosumer cameras.

Hopefully we shall see some footage very soon after IBC. The price is tremendous, and to think I already have a load of Nikon primes and zooms sitting here already.

As others have said, add to that straight forward cheap Sony power, small and lightweight and I am seriously considering chucking down a deposit.

Only reservation is post production and the huge file sizes this is going to throw up. Hopefully it will be firmware upgradeable and there will be some type of way of choosing a compression which would make file sizes a bit more manageable to edit.

i've seen that amazing footage, and it was really amazing. Also the build quality looks really good just like their s16 cams. The raw format is an open source one so that opens a lot of possibilities. Ok the size is huge and only 12 minutes per memory card. But the pricing on the cards is pretty reasonable considering it's 80 GB of high speed memory.
