Someone over at scarletuser posted this new camera. 1080P 12 bit RAW, interchangable lenses, multiple mounts, S16 sized sensor... "The preliminary price for A-cam dII is €6.950" approx. $12,188US.

The more I look the more I like. 1-60 FPS. Priced much higher than scarlet or the hpx170 class, but right in the ex3 and HPX500 territory, but 12 bit RAW. Still cheaper than a red one. This is almost exactly what the scarlet "why no interchangable lens" crowd was asking for (at a cost, but arguably reasonable) Sure its 1080P but that's RAW so the resolved resolution could potentially rival or even beat 3k. And if I'm reading this correctly, the camera comes out on Friday!?!?!
 
that's very exciting. and sensor size : 10,6 mm x 6 mm (Super-16).
i hope they will show some footages at IBC and put them on the net.
 
Not that much cheaper than a Red One.

If I were spending that much money, I'd go for a Red one.

Even though Scarlet won't have interchangeable lenses, it will still be 3k resolution.

And uncompressed sounds all sexy until you have to actually EDIT with it.

That's why RED uses a mildly compressed format.

In fact, almost EVERY HD format is compressed in SOME way.
 
it's sold with an optic, 9mm f/1.5
it's ready to use out of the box.
it seems to be in the same spirit as the super16s in the 70S like the one Kubrick used for the raped woman scene of clockwork orange for example. audio, and output for monitor.
 
Oh absolutely fascinating! Yep all the fanboyish over vaporware scarlett (i hope it rocks obviously) does make this seem like a promising alternative!

I'll certainly be watching this in detail!

I should also add, that reliability and support is the MOST important thing imo.

Seriously? This is like 5gb per minute in STILL SEQUENCES! It might have it's uses, but shooting fiction, will not be one of them. Something along the lines of product footage in a studio maybe.

also, you can't order one of these. you can PRE-order. no footage, one photo. seems just as much as vaporware as the scarlet.

Not to knock these guys, this might be awesome, just think the the comparisons are inaccurate.

This cam looks sweet... Raw/ uncompressed is the way to do things gentlemen.

How cool is that 80gig RAM module?... fastest in the world?... Anyone know if its included in the price???

Everything except the S16 sensor sounds PERFECT... if its Global Shutter Im in.
 
No doubt that RAW will be a pain in the butt compared to the red or p2 workflow, those companies have the edge there, but its not as if folks have never used proxies before.

Storage will need to be massive and will make you reconsider which shots you "print". This would be essentially a film workflow (also a pain in the butt).

But I think some folks will sacrifice a little workflow ease for RAW masters. This is what people were begging for from Juan and his HVX andromeda thing.

As for the s16 sensor, I too wished for 35mm cine sized sensor, but the choice makes sense as the companies other camera is a S16 film camera. This also fills a niche. The folks who wanted interchangable lenses from their smaller sensor cameras. Its priced to compete with the EX3 and HPX500, but with a 1080P raw image. It doesn't compete directly (from a optics choice and sensor size perspective) with RED (yet).

One other possible negative I noticed would be that the focal plane appears to be in the front 15% of the camera. Won't this cause balancing and potentially panning issues. how do you mount this to a tripod. I suppose the back 85% could be really light so the balance point is at the focal plane with a heavy lens.

Hopefully we can see footage tomorrow so we can start tearing it apart on what really matters, image quality.
 
Some more specs, pics and data about the cam from the company would be nice. Maybe even some footage:) This is a neat cam. The company should put out more info on it cause I highly doubt people will put down 12 grand (7g's Euro) without know what they're getting.

Any body got footage or more data about the cam please chime in.

also remember that for the indie filmmaker, S16 lenses are a lot cheaper than 35mm lenses. Often 5-10x cheaper.

then again, with RED ONE you can shoot natively with 35mm OR 16mm lenses.

And I feel the need to point out that there is a difference between uncompressed and RAW. RED ONE (and Scarlet) shoots RAW, but a compressed RAW. All the benefits of the RAW workflow but with 12 to 1 compression.
