8GB P2 cards officially drop to $700

As someone who is just transitioning from film, 4 & 8 Gb cards work well. I've never had a problem with "not enough capacity"... I always wonder about the directors that need to have the camera rolling for everything, are they just that insecure about their ability? In the end the editor leaves 90% or more of their footage behind as useless time wasted---> I don't envy the editor that has to watch some of that stuff.

Did I have a point? Oh yeah be creative, think it through, shoot what you need, 4 or 8Gb is enough.

heavyG,
you have some points, but I tend to roll through 2-3 8 gig cards per each interview...so higher capacity cards have their place.

Has anybody been able to find the new 8gb price in the UK yet? I've been searching around and have found Creative Video selling them for £499+VAT (which is obviously really cheap considering how much they have been!) but that doesn't entirely equate to the euro pricing on Panasonic's website. Any price spots much appreciated!

Well,
great if its enough for you (sorry they didnt make the 2 GB cards work for the HVX, could have benn an extra challange...!), but i can swear you that there are a lot of situations, specially in documentary work, where you need more capacity than 4 or 8 GB cards (or you need a lot of them...!).

I agree that also Film has its limits here, but this is the reason why some things cant be shot on film (and the image-quality is the victim here..), and are done on video instead...!
I dont wanna mock again on HDV here, but i am sick of the look and i love the skills of the HVX (also very much in dvcpro50..), with bigger cards it can be better done...my last shot was a documentary in italy and we had 28 GB of capacitiy, which forced us to download most of the days "on the run", which was posibele, but has its limits too (you dont wanna stop an interview for too long, but have to if you are in a small team..) and finally its better you can do all that relaxed and save back home at the end of a 24 hours day...!

So i swear ill be quite happy to make my day with 2 32GB cards and maybe 2-3 8GB as a little backup, so this will be comfortable to me...but who knows, there are people like BenB who say they need to shoot a concert continiously for 2 hours, so if they wanna do it in 1080, they will be happy when they catch 2 64GB cards.....we are all different..!
:cheesy:

p.s. i hate the DV-attitude to shoot every second of bullshid, but there is something in between those two extreme points...and thats the need for higher capacitiy!

You know, this site just wouldn't be the same without abaddon proudly announcing he's waiting for the 10TB P2 cards. Always makes me laugh.

10TB?

I can't wait.

sell your 8 gigers now, on ebay many morrons who don't look up prices are still bidding over 800 for them. i't anoying the hell out of me cause I want to pick up some for under 500 bucks.

Haha jason,

ME TOO. I've been lookin for people who are dumping their 8's below the new price point, but ppl keep bidding 800+ for used p2's. Not much different than what used 8gb cards were going for before the price drop. I suspect it is because not many retailers have p2 cards availalbe at the new price point. Oh well, good for those sellers.

You can get an 8GB from Full Compass, ProMedia, SC, and others for about $650.00.

Why fool with all the pitfalls of eBay to try to save a few dollars?

not sure if anyone posted this yet... but for the p2 party at NAB, we got these:

Now that pic is a good omen. Maybe Panasonic will make up for the late 16gig by announcing both the 16gig and 32 gig cards. And if they keep their promise of under $1000 for the 32gig I may just get excited to know what happens at NAB.

I'm hopeful because 8gig compact flash are common now so raiding 8gig cards shouldn't have to be at the end of 2007. Com'on Panasonic this may just get you over the hump of cost and capacity issues. 32 min of 1080p-Damn yes.

Ha ha david you're funny. Hmmmmm. Oh man, lawyers. Next time I hope for your sake demos's are put on by Yoshi Yamada.

It's never been officially announced, no. So the only source for that price is that one article. Panasonic's big press conference is only about 14 hours away, so hopefully some blogger or other will post live updates and we'll know then if there's a formal announcement of 32GB cards and, if so, anticipated prices. Frankly I'd be surprised if they announced a price for a memory product that's not going to hit the store shelves for another 8 months or so...

I dont expect any reference to price. You cant say that 8GB are $699, 16GB are $1199 and 32GB will be $999... no way...

ash =o)

I don't know. We may hear something about prices. At least that's what I am taking from a Jan quote that said something along the lines of "concerning prices, I'm sworn to secrecy until nab". I could be misquoting from my bad memory. It'd be nice. After a long wait, it would be nice to see a pretty firm layout of the roadmap on p2 for the rest of the year. Maybe just wishful thinking though.

My prediction:

They'll announce the 16GB cards, they'll cost at least $1600. They'll announce that the 32GB will be out by the end of the year, just like the 16GB was out by the end of last year.

Well, you'd be waaaaaaay off. 16GB cards were announced, and they're $900 list price. And they'll be here in May.

They did announce 32's, but they also put a sort of date on it. They said "November."
