80D picture profile

I posted in the other thread that I got a great deal on the 80d and once I sell my 70d it won’t mean I’m too far out of pocket. Now I’m interested in picture profiles, I was using one I purchased from Shane Hulbuts store for the 70D which was great for matching c100. I will have to test that on the 80D but I was wondering what else there is. Shane doesn’t reccomend Cinestyle as he says it makes an 8 bit camera act like 6 bits...so what is or most likely was everyone using that’s close to log. Also Eoshd log is not something I would touch again!

Personally, I think it's best to use 'neutral' with contrast and saturation dialed down a bit. Some people turn everything down to the lowest setting, but I think that's too much and it makes it more difficult to grade later (especially putting the nice color back in). Sharpness should already be at its minimum in that profile.

I usually lower contrast 2-3 clicks and saturation 1-2 clicks (2 for skin tones and 1 for nice outdoor filming). Even if you dialed down contrast all the way it's easy to put it back in vs. Canon's natural color, IMO.

On the 5D3 I was able to get good results tweaking the built in profiles, starting with Neutral or Faithful.

After getting a C300 II and being spoiled by log, I found the 1DX II's (and 80D's) blacks to be crushed and the colors to be a bit off that no amount of built in profile tweaking could fix. I too tried a log emulation custom picture style, but quickly found it ruined skin tones.

If you want to DIY, perhaps try Canon's Picture Style editor- it is possible to fix the color and blacks / gamma to produce max DR without log and great skin tones at the same time :)

Thanks JCS, I’m jealous of your c300mk2! But appreciate all your help. The plan is to try the Shane Hulbut profile from my 70d, purchase Filmic Skin and then see what works best. I’m not keen to try my own special sauce as I’m limited in skills in that area, but atleast I have a color checker passport to test with...

Don't be jealous- I sold the C300 II after finding that the 1DX II + Filmic Skin was better for our needs than the C300 II. And the 80D with its smaller size and flip out screen is helpful for certain shots where the 1DX II is too big/heavy.

I recently looked back over my work for the past few years and noticed I shot a lot more with smaller cameras. Other than perhaps the EOS R (so I can install Filmic Skin and use on-hand Canon lenses for another camera angle for live streaming), there's nothing on the market that's been motivating an up/side grade over the 1DX II + 80D combo.

Ok I’ll quit being jealous of the c300mk2 then lol. The 80d is really a side step for me as I realise that I’ll
be on the c100mk1 for some time yet ( 4K = 2 new cameras and new computer for me) and might as well have a b-cam I have confidence with as opposed to the 70 which falls apart pretty quick if the scene isn’t perfectly lit. Also the DPaF doesn’t have both the phase detect and contrast detect the c100 and 80d have...

Canon’s website has additional picture styles online. You can download those and see if you like them better. You can also mess around in the Picture Style Editor.

Appreciate the tip, but I'd rather 'stand on the shoulders of giants'...

So the new (used) 80d has arrived, and its in great condition, shuttercount of 7000 if that means anything to us video people! I'm starting to test profiles now, but even the stills that I took of my 70d to sell it on ebay have a real fresh look to them.
