Shutter speed and fluorescents. Don't ever change the shutter speed away from 1/60th, and you won't see this happen.

I said 1/60th. The bands *will* be there on 1/50th (unless you're in a PAL country).

The *only* shutter speeds that will avoid that effect, in the USA, are 1/60th, 1/40th, 1/30th and 1/24th. You may or may not get the effect on 1/120th.

Never ever try to shoot 1/50th under fluos or HMIs or sodium vapor or mercury vapor or any magnetic-ballast light source. Use 1/60th.

Thanks so much! When shooting in "normal" conditions should I run it @ 1/50th or 60th? Lammy there was daylight coming in through the windows that's why I didn't even think about the flous, I turned them of and they were gone. I had thought I had shot in there with them on before (it's my kitchen) without problem, but I assume I had been @ 1/60th.

My constant advice is whenever using a DSLR or any CMOS camera, you should always have a stock shutter speed of 1/60th, and never 1/50th. (unless you're in PAL territory, in which case your stock shutter speed should be 1/50th instead of 1/60th).

Never change that shutter speed away from 1/60th unless you know exactly what you're doing, because the results you got are exactly what will happen. But that will not happen if you use 1/60th.
