7D workflow?

Having searched the 7D forum for "workflow" I'm surprised this hasn't come up before.

What is the recommended workflow for the 7D?

I have around around 68 short *.mov clips and importing my clips into Vegas seems to freeze Vegas. It seems to work on importing, reaches around 50% done and then freezes. Having left it for an hour I decided not to let it run any longer and just force-quit.

Tried using Voltaic HD, but it seems to be stuck on "preparing" forever, and when it finally converts a file, it seems to lose top of the frame, and replaces the image at the bottom with a movie of the desktop, hard-written into the movie file. Also, the resulting files are less than a tenth the size of the originals, which leads me to believe it's losing information.

I downloaded Cineform, the trial a few months ago, but the program kept shutting down unexpectedly, and having been in contact with Cineform support about it, I eventually gave up on that. Now when I try to install a new demo of Cineform, it of course says "demo expired".

Editing a clip or 2 at a time in Vegas seems to work fine, but I'd like to know what is the recommended workflow for using the 7D, for tv shows and work that lasts longer than a couple of minutes?

My system:

i7 920
6GB RAM
Win XP 64 bit
Vegas 64 bit

Thanks

Everything I put on the timeline has been reencoded to DNxHD. I've used Premiere projects with 200 clips with no problems. The next generation of Adobe products will work with 7D files in realtime.

Hi Brad, I'm working with Vegas. Are you saying there is no way to work with the Canon 7D and Vegas?

Hey Matt,

Vegas doesn't handle the raw h.264 Quicktime files too well when you have a lot of them in the timeline. I edited a 10 minute project on Vegas 8 with proxy files made from my 5d/7d footage and when I started switching back to the originals, I ran into all sorts of problems.

The basic workflow option for Canon 7d footage are transcoding (Cineform, Mpegstreamclip), proxy editing and another option is DVFilm Epic I that allows real-time editing in Vegas 9/32bit (64bit support on the way).

Epic I lets your import the 7d files into Vegas and creates instant edit epic files in the background while you edit. You can make full, half or quarter size epic files depending on what your system can handle or your preference. Once you are done editing with the realtime epic files, you can switch back the original h.264 files for export from your original quicktimes.

Also, Epic makes Vegas handling of Quicktimes more stable allowing huge projects with lots of clips. It handled my entire 10 minute project with no problem.

Check out the website for a free demo and more info: www.dvfilm.com/epic

Hope this helps,
Andy

wow thanks Andy, I checked out Epic. if only Epic I had 64-bit support now, I'd have gone for it! I use 64-bit Vegas only. Now I don't know what to do! Wait for Epic in 64-bit or get Cineform NeoScene..

BTW, Mpeg Stream Clip is off the cards for me as I don't like the output. Weird gamma shift and image just doesn't look as nice as originals.

64bit support for Epic is about 1-2 weeks out right now so if you can hold tight until then, Epic maybe your solution.

With MpegStreamclip, what format are you exporting to? It shouldn't really change the image that much in transcoding. Most people go to Avid DXNhd quicktimes.

Also, you can use Vegas 9/32bit veg projects interchangeably with Vegas 9/64bit so you could do some work in 32bit and 64bit on the same project. I have both installed for other plugins that don't have support in 64bit yet.

Thanks,
Andy

I'm going to be eventually doing chroma key green screen stuff, will there be any noticeable difference between NeoScene and Epic?

I'm trying out EPIC and have noticed a couple of problems:

1. When I have '1/4 size' selected, Vegas doesn't see the 1/4 size proxies. Although 'PROXY' is showing in the image, It still only sees the original size media. (Right-click on media in Vegas timeline, and see the media's size)

2. When I want to render, I click Epic's 'full quality' button, but it doesn't seem to work. Vegas still uses the Proxies.

Hey Matt,

If you send DVFilm support a message, they should be able to help you out.

Sometimes Vegas will have the auto-adjust playback feature on in the preview window so it will try to use the high quality files automatically. Right click on the preview window and turn 'Adjust size and quality for optimal playback' off.

Support will probably be more helpful.

Thanks,
Andy

Matt, sorry I don't know much about Vegas although I've seen a recent thread about realtime playback of h.264 in Vegas.

Since you're using Vegas, I have detailed both the Cineform and DNxHD ways here (tutorial):
http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2010/03/14/starting-up-with-a-dslr-and-sony-vegas/
http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/images2/avid5d.png (export as shown there, and then load it into Vegas instead of the mentioned AVID editor)

Yes but I've heard that DNxHD isn't stable on Vegas. NeoScene costs $129 and creates unnecessarily large files - seeing as there seem to be so many free options that do the same thing floating around with less file size, I see no point in spending more $$$. I already have millions of HD's, it's hard to manage, and would rather not have to get more!

Is there anything out there apart from NeoScene that is excellent with Vegas 64bit?
