7D with 18-135mm stock lens...focusing problem

Just wondering whether it might be my lens at fault here and not the 7D.

I just received my 7D a few days ago, and the only problem I've encountered so far is the slow autofocus, like it's hunting several seconds before achieving focus.

Would this be due to my lens? I have no other lens right now to experiment with.

But compared to my Nikon D700 with an 18-200mm stock lens and my GH1 with its 14-140mm stock lens, I found autofocusing to be quite sluggish, in fact painfully slow, on the 7D.

Apart from that, no other issues. But just hoping that the slow focusing is due to the stock lens and not the 7D.

Thanks in advance fo any advice regarding a far faster focusing lens I could get if the lens is the issue.

Did you try changing it from live auto focus mode to quick mode? I don't know about the 7D, but on the 60D and t2i, the live focus mode is really slow, but the quick mode (which blocks your view for a second while you focus) works pretty well.

As for video, the canon auto focus is really unusable while recording, so if you are talking about focus while filming, there's really nothing you can do.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try Quickview. I don't think I did that yet. I was hoping it might be the stock lens. I'll plan on renting the Canon 35mm f/1.4 to see if I have the same issue. If not then I'm hoping that it's the lens. Thanks again.
