7D - What 3 lenses if you had to pick 3?

Yes, I agree about Zeiss primes. I have the 50mm f/1.4 myself and the lens construction is just lightyears ahead of anything else I've used. I'm picking up a Canon 17-55mm today actually, and just nervous about the different direction of the focus. I have a 105mm Vivitar prime and the Zeiss that spin opposite ways and it has confused me during shots before.

Zeiss ZE 21mm f/2.8 (or 18mm f/3.5)
Zeiss ZE 35mm f/2
Zeiss ZE 50mm f/1.4

+ Kit Lens to cover in between ranges and for IS - 24-135 - yeah it's flimsy, but optically it's not bad and it's cheap.

This would be for narrative stuff - I have half a mind to put in the 85mm f/1.4 as well, but that's pretty long on a crop sensor camera.

Must say though it all depends on what you want to shoot - it's hard to make recommendations without knowing that - how much speed you need, etc.

For a full on kit I'd fill this out with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and either the ZE 85mm f/1.4 or the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L

I might change the 21 2.8 for the Canon 24 1.4

 If I had a no money problem.

First of all whoever said not to get the kit lens, your crazy it cost you $50.00 more for the kit over body, and the kit has a rebate. So your getting a free lens out of it. And go with the 18-135mm lens kit. Same kit I bought, and everyone I spoke with loves this lens, and so do I. Yes its cheap, but there is a good reason for picking it. If you were on a tight budget and had that kit lens, then technically all you need to get started is the Tokino 11-16mm 2.8 and you have it all covered.

Now if money is a concern, and I had to pick three lenses, first I would buy the 7D 18-135mm lens kit. Then I would choice my 3 lenses, since the kit lens is pretty much free, and they would be:

Tokino 11-16 2.8
Sigma 30mm 1.8
Canon 50mm 1.8 Mrk II

Then again if money wasen't a concern, I would convert to PL and buy the best PL lenses I could find :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

EEEveryone talks about the 70-200 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8 but those are both over $1k! Is there at all a cheap (and close to the same range and quality) alternative??

I've lately been adapting nikons and other mount lenses because some of the good canons are absurd prices

I have had the 70-200/2.8 IS for years and only used the f4 version while traveling, but I think it's a solid replacement (f4 DoF is still very shallow at that focal length, esp for moving subjects) if not actually sharper than the heavier 2.8 glass. It's still >$1k for the IS version and the 67mm filter ring might be a consideration depending on your filter/matte box setup- I've been using regular thread-on ND filters so staying 77mm on all lenses is useful.

Since I'm still shooting stills on a FF sensor as much as I shoot video on the 1.6 crop, I'm alright with my current setup of Canon L zooms: 16-35/2.8, 24-105/4 and 70-200/2.8. If I were building a motion-only setup from scratch, I'd probably go all manual focus because accidentally going past infinity or macro when racking focus sure slows things down. I don't think the 24-105/4 is optically as good as the 24-70/2.8, but I still use it more for motion, especially handheld (for IS) and scouting (for weight and focal range). For locked down shots, I usually switch to the 24-70/2.8.

Jhoe, that's 4. You'll need to give one up.

BTW, if money is "no object," why is there a limit of 3? Just sayin'.
