7D vs hpx170: pros and cons

what u need to do is proper research...because Cranky gave u sound advice and it was glossed over without much thought or knowledge. If u think the hmc150 is "just a tapeless DVX that uses a codec that my powerPC G5 can't even process"....then ur sadly mistaken. And it records the SAME codec as the 7D. the hmc is VERY similar to the hpx170 but is much more affordable. The additional features of the hpx i;m definately sure ur not going to use. so do ur research PROPERLY. its all here on the boards. Take the time to search it out because this has been done to death so theres no shortage of info.

He also suggested the t2i and again u tossed that out of the hat because u are SORELY misinformed. the t2i is VERY much like the 7d when it comes to video and is much more affordable. Very few differences. If its stills ur considering it for or you need a more rugged durable weather sealed camera then thats another issue. Please do ur homework b4 throwing stuff out that u clearly dntt know about...then asking the same questions again. Its all here on the site.

Most of what i know about these cameras has been from reading these boards...cuz its real world experience ur getting from pros all the way down.

So p2 cards, waveform monitors, 4:2:2 color, etc. are useless frills then?

I'm well aware of the differences, do you think I'm rejecting those ideas for no reason? If I had any interest in those cameras, I would have asked about them. The t2i doesn't suit my needs, and neither does the hmc150. chill out.

You can say anything you want...but the questions u ask clearly show u dont know what ur talking about. And yeh i;m pretty chill :)

...says the guy who thinks AVCHD and h.264 are the same thing...

haha but seriously, gtfo if all you're going to do is start a pissing contest.

Regardless of the technical aspects of each of them. I prefer the "look" of the hpx170.

and

I prefer the look of the 5DMKII + GH1 over the 7D.

I definitely prefer the hpx170 also, but why do you like the 5DMKII or GH1 over the 7D?

"I really have no use for an HMC150. It's just a tapeless DVX that uses a codec that my powerPC G5 can't even process..."

What makes you think the 7d will be any better with your G5? Why do you think a 7d would be better than a T2i for video?

Doesn't make sense Buck he thinks he knows it all. Duno why he doesn't do his research properly. Then he's laughing at the fact when I pointed out the hmc150 and 7D shoot the same codec. Apparently he's under the impression avchd and h264 are different.

I don't know where you're getting this from. If I "knew it all," then why would I be asking questions in here? And by doing research do you mean, looking at specs? Because specs only mean so much, hence why I took the time to make a thread about it. What doesn't make sense is why you'd take the time to come in here and contribute nothing positive, and just make yourself look insecure by mocking somebody who is looking for opinions on whether or not a 7D would be reasonable in my situation. Do you think I'm incapable of looking up the specs? Honestly?

I've used both the hpx170 and hmc150 extensively and my computer edits the p2 footage better. Also, I'm able to edit 7D footage fine, but hmc150 footage seems to bog it down...I'm not trying to belittle your camera, it just doesn't suit my purposes. An hpx170 I can see as an upgrade because of the p2 workflow, waveforms, 4:2:2, etc. The hmc170 really seemed like a high-definition DVX...I don't see any new elements there for me to learn about.

a 7D is better than a t2i because it has a rugged construction, which is mandatory since I'll be shooting at muddy music festivals and in snowy mountains. The fact that you have to press a button for shutter is annoying, and the t2is heat up faster as well. Also, I really like night time photography, and the t2i doesn't perform as well as the 7D in lowlight situations.

No offense, but I think the reason you're getting some smarmy responses is because every one of your questions has been discussed in this forum ad nauseum. A simple search would have yielded better results.

Besides your technical questions, you should really just try both of them out yourself to get a true feeling to what will work best for you.

I've tried searching numerous times and what I found was of little relevance. Eventually I came to the conclusion that it would be easier to just ask, but apparently I'm an elitist spammer for thinking this.

AVCHD uses h.264 compression. AVCHD is h.264 at a specified bitrate, frame rate, etc.

AVCHD is h.264, but (as ATL said) not all h.264 is AVCHD. Not all h.264 is the same. Nor is all AVCHD necessarily the same. For example, while AVCHD maxxes out at 24 megabits, the visual quality at 24 megabits of PH mode is far superior to the 50 megabits of h.264 from a DSLR. On the other hand, the 17 megabits of AVCHD from a GH1 is not as robust as 9 megabits of AVCHD from an HMC150.

h.264 includes many potential toolsets (including whether to use long-GoP compression, whether to include 4:2:2 or just 4:2:0, or whether to include a full IBP group structure or a simplified IP group structure). The GH1's AVCHD and the Canon DSLR's h.264 are basically the same, with the only real difference being the amount of bandwidth allocated. Neither uses IBP, they only use IP, and that's why 21 megabits of PH-mode AVCHD on an AVCCAM camcorder is far more robust and better compression than 17 megabits of AVCHD on a GH1 or even 50 megabits of h.264 on the DSLR.

Other names for h.264 include MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC.
