7D VS. GH2 VS. D7000 - Test results

Ryan,

A great test result. I cannot comment on 7d since I don't own one. But I can say I'd agree with pretty much everything you said about d7000 and gh2 with exception of one correction about d7000. You can't change aperture with G lenses in live view mode, but you can change shutter speed in live view mode.
Thank you for sharing your test result with us.

A question. When you said d7000 was least affected by rolling shutter, you meant when shooting in 24fps, correct? gh2 and 7d can shoot 60fps at 720p and I would assume 60fps minimize rolling shutter effects on both cams.

im pretty sure you made a mistake when you state that 7D, outputs SD, when connecting to a monitor. In fact the 7D is the only Canon dslr as far as I know that monitors in HD through hdmi. Just thought I would point that that out.

Thanks for the correction- you are correct, I misspoke- it is the aperture that has be be changed out of live view, not shutter.

Yes- I was shooting in 24 fps.

I'll check that again today, as I'm headed out for a day of shooting with my friend who owns the 7D. But I'm 90% sure that it was switching to SD when record was being pressed ...

nope. 7d does HD to monitor. I own both an HD monitor and the 7d :) As previously stated its the only canon dslr that does.

Thanks very much for the test. It is unfortunate that it seems that most people are not interested in doing test of the gh2. It is a shame because it is really another step in the hdslr revolution (no moire, aliasing, true hd video). The test I was really waiting for was the dynamic range test. What I don't understand is the disparity in the measured dynamic range. One of the best site testing the dynamic range is provideocoalition . With test ranging from the Alexa to the Canon 5d. They see the 5d (which I have seen quoted at about the same than the 7d) more in the 10+ reading. The single camera test done buy zacuto was more in the 11.3 stop, the nikon was much lower (even that in photographic terms it is about 14 stops in RAW!!!). Is it the chart... provideocoalition uses a baclit chart. I am in no way criticizing your test, all the contrary, I am grateful, more so because for once I can see a comparison with the gh2.

Those 11.3 stops or even the 10+ stops for 5DmkII for video seem quite a bit on the optimistic side.

I don't know myself, if you look at provideocoalition.com, you have test done on a backlit chart of the canon 5d, red mx, alexa now f3 and af-100. You can clearly see the result there. For the Zacuto test I don't know the methodology. You can see a chart also publicized in an article on provideocoalition.

yes but those are testcharts, I think test at provideocoalition was made with a flat preset. The picture straight from camera wouldn't look good until graded, and when grading, that measured DR would immidiately shrink. So they might have somehow measured 11.3 stops, but that's definately not usable stops.

It is not stated anywhere in the Zacuto test, but I think that they are using the stills mode to get that kind of Dynamic range. If they are using video mode, then I would LOVE to know how they are getting those results, as I just do not see the cameras producing those kind of numbers (10+ stops) when shooting video. I spent the day shooting yesterday with DLSR's, and even my meter agreed with what I had seen with the test I shot and the resulting images - even going with the technical ranges ... the test results up on DP Preview are very close to what I found in my tests, and they are accurate with my real world experiences ... 8 Stops of DR is the best that they could pull out in video mode ... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicDMCGH2/page12.asp

I'd love for there to be 10+ stops in video, but it just is not there ...

I wonder if it is a function of the chart itself- as both myself and the DP Preview both came away with more limited range and we used the stouffer chart, where they used the DSC chart- both are back lit charts which is great, both have 13+ stops of DR there so they can both measure the range of these cameras, - but the stouffer chart costs like $50, and the DSC 102db chart / setup is almost $4,000 ... so that may be the issue here.
