7D vs GH1 comparison video please?

For those who remember what this thread was originally about (comparison videos between the GH1 and 7D), I've now posted The Great Chroma Key Smackdown. Not really a comparison video per se, but it's got footage from each of them as well as the HPX170, HMC40, and HMC150, and I'm hoping some post wizards will download the footage and show us how these beasts can key.

7d is great at seducing with initial impression but too many problems for real relationship.
Everything that you've said about the 7D could be reasonably be said about the GH1 as well. I don't see the need for camera bashing here, even if it's in jest, and especially since it strays away from the topic.

I have been testing the GH1 with old Chinon primes and have to say they look pretty good as they add the gamma in lens to give the film look, I have also tried the 7d - I actually worked on some of the research for this camera with canon - filming focus groups, ethnographic studies ect - this camera is not really optimised for video and the frame rates were added at the last minute to compete with Panasonic. I didn't like the Canon just seemed like an overweight, blotchy video nasty.

I have also done a bit of research and found these:

As you can see the canon looks blotchy, flabby and over saturated, where as the gh1 looks delicate and fine, crisp even, in comparison.

I also found this:

which blew me away!

I personally prefer the images Panasonic deliver because they aim to produce filmic quality, just look at their history. They have made high end movie cameras from year dot - panavision! plus working with Leica for so long! (they pretty much invented cameras as we know them) Canon have always aimed at the prosumer demographic when it comes to video, never the true professional and because of this their images are really geared toward low end video.

I kept the GH1 because of the fact you can use antique glass, has a swivel screen and is much more portable. It also, in my eyes has a better image....even better than the 5d.

Now if only they could sort out the frame rates and add 1080p movs we will be laughing.

Arrested Development music video now on air: http://vimeo.com/7371280

Shot on 7D. Looks pretty darn good, even their 720p slo mo shots. The interior scenes have that problem I see on the 7D where the color in the face is too cartoony / smooth / mush - but the outside shots look gorgeous.

Look closer: The faces in the exterior scene have that same "look" as in the interior scenes.

In any event, it's almost impossible to make useful evaluations watching video compressed for Vimeo & YouTube, etc. Way too many variables!

You can barely make useful evaluations watching video shot with 2 cameras sitting right next to each other, shooting with identical lighting, angles, equivalent focal lengths, lenses, subject/scene, as-similar-as-possible and "ideal" (whatever that means) settings for each cam, and so forth.

Even then, in most such tests there are still too many variables for most humans to conduct a correct and truly fair comparison -- let alone evaluate what it means. Not that it's a complete waste of time, but usually it's done incorrectly or it displays biases on the part of the testers, etc.

Anyway, isn't this a GH1 forum? Why is the 7D being discussed so much here? There are other forums for the 7D. :-)

Agreed, though it's a 7D/GH1 comparison thread so it's pretty much inevitable that people will post links of footage they deem worthy when people start playing favorites. The thing I don't understand is if you're going to do a comparison vid, why not try to match the shots exactly? Either camera settings and then in post. When footage looks that different and one is flat or the other looks crushed it just becomes a moot exercise. I liked the Red One, GH1, and 5D comparison vid because they did their best to match all three.

Wait a second... isn't panavision a separate company that has nothing to do with panasonic?
Correct. The announcement was that Panavision bought a whole bunch of Panasonic equipment to offer for rent in their locations. The only relationship between them, as far as I know, is customer and vendor.

ROFL

Panasonic and Panavision have absolutely nothing to do with each other, they just share the same first syllable in the name. In fact Panavision has been working with Sony in their development of digital movie cameras.

Same here. I thought the 5Dll and Red One matched better (in that video) than the GH-1 (which had its own look) especially towards the end. I’d rather comparisons like these myself.

Hi Isaac: If you're referring to this video:
http://vimeo.com/5981422

... I thought this was a fun "test", but only semi-useful as a comparison of these cams. It was mostly useful as a marketing piece in the GH1's favor, because the GH1 shots didn't look too bad, and because the GH1 was being associated with much more expensive cams.

Even if the GH1 had fared poorly in this test, it would still be good marketing for the GH1 because it's largely true that "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

But maybe you're referring to a different video?

That's the video. I didn't think of it as a marketing tool, I mean sure you can see it that way. I just thought that it adequately showed that these cameras can complement each other and don't necessarily need to be competing for the same market.

GH1/7D as B cameras or grabbing shallow DOF closeups and multiple coverage can be a huge timesaver for low budget features that have short shooting schedules.

Test footage is usually way more boring than that.
If you're looking at that footage to be entertained rather than to see subtle camera differences then you are not the target audience for the video.

Yeah it was pretty boring. I usually download the videos because you can better see the quality from that and the 7D does have an issue with color mush just as the gh1 does have an issue with mud or codec breakup. I really just need to have both of these things on different days.
