7D vs GH1 comparison video please?

That's like saying the PS3 has similar graphics to the Wii.
It's not an opinion but a fact, the GH1 has a far better video implementation than the Nikon D90. I'm not sure how can someone come to a different conclusion.

Because it's macworld doods! I mean any magazine about Mac has to be right eh? Oh wait... Mac doesn't make cameras do they? Ooops my bad. I have a macbook pro by the way so don't any apple smoochers come at me now. hehe.

Well, I finally got my hands on both of these puppies for several hours and shot all sorts of stuff with the kit lenses on both, then watched the footage on a 28' lcd and then a big over 50 inch plasma. As much of you said, the footage was much better on the GH1 right out of the camera than a lot of the vimeo dls, but there was the loss of detail in the blacks and solid color areas and some mush and funkiness which was very visable to my eyes on the bigger plasma.

My updated strength & weakness chart is now as follows:

GH1 pros:
Obviously it is cheaper. $1500 vs $1900 w kit lens which is what I could be starting with... and the GH1 kit's lens is optimized for video.
It has a much better flip out swivel widescreen LCD so you can shoot from all angles easily without needing a workaround.
It has way better manual and auto controls, way better exposure and white balance control.
It appears to be sharper and have more detail to my eyes.

GH1 cons:
The codec IS wimpy/delicate.. & too compressed which makes me sad, but I can see that it can be worked around if you are extremely careful and when you ARE careful, the images are AMAZING.
There are issues in high detail 1080p... it was not me just freaking out over vimeo downloads.
The 24p is recorded as a pulldown mode over 29.97 so you have to do the pulldown removal baffles me... why the hell did they do that ? Huge bandwidth waster in the already limited 17mbits codec.
To me, and some will call me nuts, but after playing with both cameras for hours, the GH1 has more rolling shutter jello problems than the 7D.
As a still camera it does not compare to the 7D.

7D pros:
It records true 24p (23.97) so now pulldown removal bullcrap needed.
It has a much better codec going at about 45 mbits/sec, and this does translate...this causes the images to have what I can only call a more solid look/feel to them. The gh1 looked great but as if it seems to have a thinner image and the 7d thicker.
Still camera much better than GH1.
Less rolling shutter jello issues than the gh1 to my eyes. Handheld 7D was not as deadly a hand held gh1 in 1080p.

7D cons:
Screen sucks compared to the gh1, and it is on the back so you can't swivel it.
There are some definite issues with it looking soft or at least softer or lacking the detail the gh1 can get on wide shots. This is a big deal and makes me worry about putting the extra money into the 7D.
Colors tend to be oversaturated and whites tend to run hot which if not careful can make it look 'videoish'.
12 min recording time can be a problem on some projects I have to do like multiple cam plays.

OVERALL:

I like the heavy duty pro feel of the 7D, and I think clients respect that camera more so that may help with making $$$, BUT I definitely liked some of the GH1 images better on the wide shots. It really is a choice of "how do you want to be crippled?"

After all of this, I think I am going to give the GH1 a shot first simply because it is cheaper and I think I may be able to work around the issues for now. If it doesn't work out I'll return it and go for the 7D.

As far is ninny nanying about the tech before you buy a camera.. well.. yes, I am guilty of it, I am an over analyzing nutcase and that's just what I do before I buy something. Of course either camera in capable hands with a good story will come out great... but I can only afford ONE right now so I am gonna ninny nanny about the tech stuff. SO THERE! That's what this forum is for isn't it?

Yeah but you did what a LOT of people do NOT do. You actually tried and looked for yourself. THAT is how you do it dood. Well done.

Yeah, good for you Blackout, I really thought you were going to get a 7D just from the threads. Testing is the way to go, though! Not everyone can do that, but it's the best way to pick your camera, for sure!

Well, with the money saved with both the price difference of the base cameras and getting second hand Canon FDs / Nikons instead of pricey new EFs you can kit up your GH1 like this (plus a matte box) and impress the hell out of your clients. Plus being able to do precise focus pulls all by yourself thanks to the EVF/Swivel LCD combo.

i have a question that i don't think has been asked before.. which camera between the Gh1 and the 7d is most likely to help me get laid???

cheers.

I was really set on the 7D mostly because of the codec but I am not liking the softness / aliasing and the over color saturation is a bit much. It is harder to get rock solid focus on the 7D as well... I am still a bit worried about the GH1 codec but I figure I'll try the cheaper camera first and see how bad the issues are with me using it. From what I gather, most people don't know how to shoot with it or do the workflow right to get really clean images. If you bumble in your shooting / workflow, the gh1 looks like it will fall apart easier than the 7D in the process... but the images that are shot / edited / compressed correctly in that certain magic way on the gh1 which are few and far between in what is avalable to dl online are stunning. I was mostly shooting some street and autumn leaves by central park but I was very impressed with how sharp it looked. The jello did seem worse to me on the gh1 though so time to learn floaty ghost hands movement or super smooth fluid head.

hahah all these things are so true. The GH1 basically is really gorgeous if you move very slow and carefully with your camera movement like you would with a fragile woman. Any pan or move that isn't silky smooth and slow creates ughhh. The 7D can handle more movement without image breakup from what i saw in my tests absolutely... but it is not as sharp...

The gh1 is a virgin, and you have to be careful, but it could be really nice if you are. The 7D has been around the block and can handle a bit more.

This thread is getting odd, haha!

And revsta, the GH1 work beautifully in 1080p 90% of the time. I only use 720 for slow-mo and some steadicam stuff.
