7D vs GH1 comparison video please?

Yes it is. Play it back full screen on a regular 24 inch screen and you'll know why.

Somebody said GH1 footage is useless because the codec isn't given enough bitrate. And you answer by posting a low-res overcompressed video. I don't get it?

Looks as good as any other Vimeo compressed footage on a 32 inch 720 HDTV. Really good in fact. And I'm sitting two feet away. From the couch it looks like a real movie. What specifically is bothering you?

I want to be clear here guys that I'm not trying to become a fan-boy, I just feel that the GH1 gets hit with a lot of buzz-words from people who haven't road-tested it. When the 7D was announced, I was sure that it would slay my GH1, which I'd just got. As more footage and evidence as come out, I'm very glad I didn't switch. I've also considered something like an HVX but decided against it. Yes, I would like to own an EX1, and possibly a MKII as well, but in it's price range, I think the GH1 is awesome.

When the camera moves, the 7D footage looks like it holds up better to me.

When completely locked down... it's a draw or maybe a slight edge to the gh1

Also most of the GH1 video I can find is 720p, which I don't like... it's so much softer when you are watching on a real 1920 x 1080 monitor. Can you point me to some 1080p GH1 dls?

Anyone seen this?

Very nice 7D intercut with hvx200

Unless you own or have used a GH1 or a 7D yourself your opinions and conclusions are worthless. It is that simple. I own a GH1 and the footage at 1080p is just beautiful. I can say it because I see it every time I actually shoot stuff myself thereof I can make a real assesment. I am 100% sure Pappas feels the same way.

Well, one has to make a decision somehow, so the best I can do is download high quality clips. You can't play with them very much in a store. I did have a chance to get my hands on a GH1 a friend had but I didn't get to play with it nearly enough. Also... people say vimeo and websites are not a way to judge but much of the work you do will only be viewed on the web, and it does look like the 7D compresses slightly better to sights like vimeo and the like.

This is not an attack on your choice of camera.. why do people get so touchy? My opinions have as much validity as anyone else's, with the camera or not. Does anyone who has an opinion on a one movie looking like it was shot better than another movie have to own panavision cameras? No.

At Photo Plus Canon had a theater set up presentation that included footage from the 5d and 7d on a huge screen. The audience that saw it with me as well as myself went out at the end of it just astonished. At that moment I realized that if you are uncertain about a purchase you can't in a million years based your decision based on Vimeo or Youtube.

blackout. get the camera, try it out. return if you don't like it. papas is right. a lot of the criticism around here are people who are just weird and like to complain about the littlest things and the majority don't even own the camera. or even A CAMERA. some being completely bias toward brand also plays a huge factor in peoples comments and opinions. go to the nikon d90 thread. people love their d90, i personally think it's good, but nowhere near the gh1. go to the 5d thread, 7d thread. there is like a tiny camera war going in just one section. then go to the cinematography forums and the veterans there laugh at the mere fact people are using the RED camera to shoot movies. you have to review it yourself. the codec isn't as weak as people make it out to be. it's actually pretty good, DEPENDING, on what you use it for. i've personally used the gh1 and d90 and can only express opinions on just those two camera's. but again, it's my opinion. someone else like Jon Cab for example will have a completely different opinion than me and we've used both camera's. don't feed into the trolls about which is better than the next and just try it for yourself. keep your receipt and take it back if it's not for you.

I saw your pro and con list however it is not accurate. It is basically going off what other people have said who also probably have never had the camera. A lot of people on here say the GH1 is a 720p camera however I disagree completely. Going to 720p is only if there is going to be a lot of movement in hight detail like a pine forest. The camera can be hand held. I shot a short almost entirely hand held with the GH1. Not saying my short was good but I didn't see any of those so called misleading problems floating around. I also think opinion has to be based on experience. One can't have a valid opinion on a movie if they didn't see it. Having an opinion of how a camera functions and having never touched it is just relaying the information they heard from somebody else. I think that is what people were trying to say. To me the GH1 is better than the 7D because of the moire and aliasing problem. You can't get rid of that in post and the 7D just has way too much. I've seen crazy attempts to remove it by putting cellophane over the lens which is silly if you ask me. But there are still people using the 7D successfully so it's not useless to them. All just depends on what flavor you like. Anyway this is a dead horse so I'll get off of it because you can't get anywhere riding a dead horse.

I did a bunch of testing last week between the GH1/7D, but also compared to 5D, Vixia, and HVX200.

I must say that I'm liking the GH1 more than the 7D overall. The only thing is the weak codec. But it's not stopping me. What I'm doing now is trucking the 5D and GH1 alongside each other. At the moment I don't need sync sound with the 5D, so I just conform the footage to 24p.

I havne't found the preferred usage of the 7D yet. I'm pretty disappointed by the aliasing, lack of resolution, and noise at high iso. Say what ya will about fixed pattern noise on the GH1, but the 7D is even noisier at the equivalent light sensitivity levels. All that being said... I still love all these cameras in one or many ways.

Thanks Blackout, very nice and crisp. I don't think that it looked "filmish" though but very nice nevertheless.

Many people love the image from Canon cameras so it all really comes down to your shooting style and image prefrences.

Yeah, the 7D seems to have way over saturated colors straight out of the camera. Almost a Technicolor look, and more blown out highlights. I personally would try and tone them down a bit. I see the aliasing issue and it's nasty, but all of the videos I have viewed so far seem to break up on the GH1 image but the 7D hold pretty solid. it is almost as if the GH1 image is kind of thin and delicate and the 7D is a bit thicker and sturdy.

I know you can't tell the camera quality just from vimeo, but I have been downloading the original quicktimes, and the 7D has always looks like a ot more solid image is all I'm saying. There was one italian shoot on the GH1 that looked really amazing: http://vimeo.com/groups/26655/videos/6563359 (that's the best GH1 footage I've seen so far) but again, all static shots mostly.

It looks like the 7D kit is not available at B&H today but the gh1 is in stiock so I may just bight the bullet and try the GH1 first and see.

Dear Blackout,

I shot the italian stuff you are talking about above. Let me assure you, that I am very happy with that camera. The codec also holds up if there is more movement, see these examples (all shot in 1080p, with kit lens):

http://www.vimeo.com/7305316

http://www.vimeo.com/7006327

http://www.vimeo.com/6659050

I think the "codec issue" is related to automatic modes on the camera. I have only used manual modes so far (e.g. manual WB, manual aperture, ...) and I recall seeing the "mud" and "codec issue" in two scenes so far (out of ~2000 I shot). Those two I wouldn't have used in post anyway.

Since I started to use Canon FD lenses, I never saw mud again. By the way, the 50mm f1.4 is a terrific choice! You can shoot at night, the light sensitivity is phenomenal - all for 50€!

Don't forget the package. The GH1 with the kit lens is a run & gun cam with a small form factor, autofocus and decent audio. Perfect for documentaries as well.

I love my GH1.

best regards, Gunther

check out this vimeo clip. weird how you don't have to move the camera around frantically to convey a decent story.

Exactly. That is how 99% of pro movies are shot. I can't understand the misconception that the GH1 wouldn't be able to shoot a movie with the CORRECT amount of movement. But that assertion comes from people that don't even have their own GH1.

I think Blackout needs to buy a 7D. He's going to be convinced that the GH1 breaks up under hand-held or motion conditions, no matter how many GH1 users tell him otherwise or post great vimeo videos across two different threads.

And despite the slight softness, other sorts of video artifacts, larger form factor, smaller lenses selection and increased cost, I'm sure the 7D is a wonderful camera.

I'm very curious to see the two best Monster Fest (that I've seen) entries so far, 'Dispatch' and 'Bits and Pieces' when we can watch them in HD on vimeo. One is the GH1, one is the 7D, both talented cinematographers and storytellers.
