7d sound options

I'm close to buying a 7d for making short films but I am not sure what sound gear I need to buy. I am a complete newbie when it comes to sound so if someone could spell out for me the basic gear I will need for recording sound? What's the best bang for your buck sound gear that is in use currently?

The only thing I have researched is the h4n. Would this be able to cover most of my sound needs?

Thank you!

H4n will allow you to record two channels of ambient sound using the two onboard microphones as well as two additional channels using external XLR microphones.

With a couple of decent microphones and the H4n makes a very acceptable recorder.

Which mics should I look at? Are there any resources on this board for learning how to setup a scene for recording? I have no clue how to go about even setting up the microphones correctly to get the best sound.

Well, the type of microphone you choose will depend on what and how you are shooting, to say nothing of the brand and specific piece of equipment.

I'd recommend looking through the audio section of the boards here. Audio is, in my opinion, often overlooked. It is a very important element of any production and even answers to simple questions like yours constitute entire books for audio beginners.

I use the Sennnheiser ew100G3 wireless receiver and sennheiser skp100g3 with a senssheiser e835 mic ,
i get very good audio, make shure the rf out level is --18, and Sqelch low,
works like a charm crystal clean audio,
went trough a lot of pain with the audio , so now i share my secret....

A wee bit out of my price range

I'm looking to spend around $500 total, hopefully less, on sound gear.

Including the price of the H4n? What kind of production are you shooting?

IMHO, a bare bones set of audio equipment (that will actually be useful in the long run) runs closer to $1000 minimum.

I will be shooting short films. I am in the process of getting ready to head back to school for film production. I realize there will be equipment I can check out but I prefer to have my own equipment available to me 24/7

Really? The h4n is $300, a mic or two and some cables puts me at around $500 or less. What else should I be looking at other than a boom pole?

I was going to buy the Panasonic hmc150 but with the Scarlett coming out sometime next year I think it's a better investment to buy the 7d as I will be able to use the same lenses with the Scarlett.
