7D "Scene Files"?

Hey guys,

I'm having a hard time finding out information on custom "scene files" for the 7D's video function. What exactly do you use? Are the settings comparable to what Panasonic uses?

Thanks.

It is the picture Styles functions.

You can also upload custom picture styles from your computer using the Canon software.

can you shoot B&W in cam?

is shooting B&W that big of a priority for some people ? you relize that it's a matter of just slapping on ONE filter in post that removes the color and that's that right?

and yes... you can shoot in B&W in the camera.

Warning ... shooting Black and White in camera will seriously decimate your image ... the nature of h264 compression is that it has very high color fidelity and uses that to create the image more than the tonal data...

At least that's what I've half-gleaned from shooting B/W in camera and then looking at the footage afterwards and seeing intense stair-stepping and moire issues not present in color footage...

Just do it in post...

The picture style software (edit in your computer and upload them to camera) basically gives you total control of gamma curves in every channel. You can then upload them to the camera using the EOS utility software.

So you can set up a style via the Picture style software and then upload it to your camera (for use in shooting VIDEO, not just stills)? From reading that page it seemed like the picture style editor was for use on pics that were already shot. Just wanted to double check - seeing as I haven't used Canon photo gear before.

Also - is the software both Mac/PC?
I know that's less of an issue since the switch to intel on the mac side, just checking since I'm running Mac OS over here (and have a 7D on preorder).

I believe so. I thought the same thing as you, that it ws strictly a opst thing, but if you sift through the documentation, there's a mention near the end that you can upload your style files via the EOS utility, and cross-checking the manual for the EOS Utility confirmed that this was so. And according to the EOS 7d manual (WTF...just put it all in one book, guys!) yes, you can use picture styles for video.

That said, there's a good point above about whether processing in the camera might reduce your options compared to what you could achieve by doing offline color correction in post. I'm interested in it not so much for getting a particular look as because it may be a way to control for highlights and suchlike.

would be really nice to find the perfect curve to use in camera to get he most apparent dynamic range and highlight falloff.

Picture styles apply to video on the 5D2, no reason why the 7D should be different.

Picture Style Editor comes in both Win and Mac versions on the software CD.

Beware though, PSE is really a big tease. You can achieve some stuff with it, but the curve interface is pretty crappy. It's really easy to create "wacko" curves.

Also, you can adjust saturation for a given tone (say you want to desaturate skin tones or something), but you quickly bounce against bizarre limits when trying to push the effect beyond "subtle".

After casually playing with it, I came to the conclusion that shooting "Neutral" or "Faithful" and tweaking in post was safer that playing with PSE. Your mileage may vary.

Still cool for in camera "special effects" though.
