I read somewhere that you have no idea how long you have recorded/there is no way to tell if you are about to run out of space.

How do you guys deal w/ this problem?

IIRC, while you are recording it does count the recording time. When you stop, it displays another 4GB "chunk" (i.e., 29:59 in SD, 12:00 in HD) if it is available. If you don't have a full 4GB "chunk" available on the card, it displays an estimate of whatever is left (i.e., 18:00 in SD or 8:30 in HD). You have to notice if the available record time falls below the typical 4GB "chunk" to know that you're nearing capacity on your card.

Untrue.

If you press the INFO button on the left hand side of the camera, it will display a time next to the format setting. For instance, mine reads out:

1920 24 29:59

My understanding is that it will always read out as "29:59" until you have less than 30 minutes left on your card. Then it will count down as normal. For instance if you only have 4GB left on the card, it will display:

1920 24 12:00

or thereabout.

You can also go into the menu and scroll over to the 7th tab (yellow wrench No. 1). Then select format. This will show you, with a neat little bar and everything, how much data has been used and how much remains available.

---

Once you start recording, the time left indicator (which normally reads 29:59, as mentioned above) switches to a time recorded indicator, counting the minutes and seconds the camera has recorded. When the camera has recorded for approximately 12 minutes, it will have written its maximum filesize of 4GB and will stop recording automatically. To continue recording, just hit the START|STOP button again.

Again, if you aren't seeing these options displayed on your LCD make sure the camera is in Manual mode (M) on the left hand dial and press the INFO button a couple of times to cycle through the display options.

I use the camera's display of shots remaining to judge the space left on a card. Before a big video shoot, I set my camera to Raw image capture. This allows 595 images on my 16GB cards. As I shoot, I keep track of the shots remaining display. When it hits 300, I know the card is halfway full. I hate having all my eggs in one basket, as it were, so I usually switch cards when I get under 100 images remaining.
