7D or New wave of cams??

I'm currently an HVX user and looking to go 7D or 5D but feel like Canon/Panasonic will come out with a new video cam that will take the technology of these SLR's to a new level.

Is there any news of canon/panny coming out with a new product that will rival these or scarlett?

And i'm torn between 5D and 7D. I love 24p but the image of 7D doesn't pop as much as the 5D. It is sorta like when I was deciding between XHA1 and my HVX.

Any comments on new cams and 5d/7d...

thanks everybody

I'm probably going to be stealing someone else's line here, but if you're shooting something NOW, then whatever works best for your situation is what you should pick up, now. If you wait for the next most improved thing...well that can become a repeating cycle and you'll never end up with a camera.

Since you have an HVX maybe you'd be happier waiting. But if you need a smaller form factor, shallow DOF, and better low-light performance in the meantime, maybe you ought to pick up a 7D. There are quite a few, "should I sell my HVX for a 7D?" threads around...

It's like the weather here in North Carolina -- if you don't like the weather, wait an hour...

The GH1 is, what, three months old? The 7D is two weeks old? Pentax is bringing out the K-X in a couple of weeks, Scarlet is going to get an updated announcement later this month. If you're not in a hurry, just wait a little while and the options will probably change substantially. If you are in a hurry, just pick the one that does the closest to what you want, because there are some incredible results being posted from these products already.

i have bought and sold two letus adapters bc of the 7d and now am nervous to commit to the 7d but honestly man- we have to buy somehting or the cycle will begin! you can't learn drums without a drumset...

Strong rumors are that a Canon 1ds or the like will drop in January, with a brand new DSP chip and all kinds of wonderful...but it'll probably cost 2x the 7d. I'm sure Canon are busy plotting the options for a something like a XR-1 that has the large sensor and shoot raw 24p in a pro video form factor, and I'm equally sure it'll cost $5000 or more.

Personally if I had a HVX I'd wait right now. If you're in Toronto, maybe you can find a 5/7d owner and team up for some cross-training? As shown elsewhere, the HVX can do a sharper image for some kinds of shots, the two together would be a powerful combo.

What type of stuff do you guys shoot? I have a 7D kit if you'd like to meet up and see what it can do for you, etc.

I, too, am an HVX200a/EX1 shooter. I picked up the 5d2 early spring and have hacked in many hours of footage from it over the summer (I shoot a lot of weddings in Alaska). Towards the end, the 5D become the 2nd camera. Last edit, almost 60% of the footage was 5d...20/20 from the HVX/EX. I'm very happy with it's performance.
I picked up the 7D a week ago or so. It's definitely "better" as a video setup, IMO. Just control wise...dedicated record button, leveling, frame rate adjustment...I'm not even a big fan of 24p so much as a 29.97 vs. 30.00.

That said...something about my 5D's picture....not sure scientifically or theoretically or whether or not FF has something to do with it and my L lenses...but it DOES have the POP you refer to. The 7D is stunning....don't get me wrong, I'm digging it. Just not quite as "vivid" or "brilliant" to me. I'm going to try to do some decent comparison shots this weekend if the weather turns. It's a bit tough with the focal length changes and lenses to appropriately do a side by side test...but I'm going to fool around and see what I can come up with. I say this with trepidation though...it is NOT a night and day difference. In fact, on my 52" Sony LCD, it's impossible for me to distinguish the difference at this point...but on my ACD with FCP in post....maybe it's my eyes, not sure:)...

I have a real fondness for the imagery of the 5d2. Maybe I'm just used to it. The 7D is right there, just not all the way right there....
