7D or 5D when 5D gets 24/25/60 fps?

So I purchased a 7D recently, and I am really loving it, more than words can describe.

Doing some research I found the 5D to be about a grand more than the 7D, but full frame, better light sensitivity, better DoF, and by the middle of this year will have all the frame rate options available that the 7D has.. are there really any downsides to the 5D at this point?

Anyone have any thoughts on the upgraded 5D in comparison to the 7D?

Well, the downside to the 5D is that it *doesn't* have all those frame rate options. And we don't know when it will have, other than to say that it's supposed to happen in "the first half" of 2010. And it costs $1,000 more.

Yeah, of course money is always an issue, but for those of us who decided on the 7D over the 5D for different reasons besides the price difference, it kind of nullifies that.
Wasn't there an official announcement that new firmware will be released within the first half of this year? Is there good reason to believe Canon won't stay true to their word?

I'm also concerned when the 5D does get their firmware updates, that the value of my 7D will also decrease.. right now it's a great camera that has it's ups and downs when compared to the 5D, but when the updates are released, it might just be the "cheaper 5d" without a full frame sensor.

Except (from a value to regular photogs standpoint) it also is twice as fast, has way better autofocus and is better sealed than the 5D.

Yes, "the first half" of 2010 -- that's what I said in my post above. And that means anywhere from now to June 30th. But nowhere in the press release did it say anything about offering 60p, it said only that it would offer 24p.

As for value, any electronic device loses value the minute you buy it. And yes, at that point, if the firmware update actually does add all the framerates, then that's exactly what it'll be -- a 5D with a smaller sensor and a $1,000 lower price tag. So... I'm not sure I see the problem... it costs less, the other costs more, so if the other does more (eventually) then that's what justifies its additional cost...

There's no complaint or problem. I was just confirming that after the firmware update for the 5D the 7D will be, in fact, just a cheaper 5D, which it ISN'T right now, since it also has it's upsides. (And I'm talking specifically towards video not photography)

I know that it lost value when I bought it, but that doesn't mean it can't lose more value as time progresses (or in this case while new firmware is released), the fact is it might be worth it for me to upgrade sooner than later, and that's what I was trying to decide on.

Also, there are several references showing that the 5D will indeed have 720p 60 fps firmware:

This would only be an issue for me if the 5D were roughly the same price as the 7D. But it's $1000 more. I have no regrets about my 7D purchase, and still won't even when the firmware update to the 5D is eventually released.

Cheaper 5D?

The 7D has two processors and shoots 8fps raw stills. It also has 720/60. Not to mention a much better interface for video.

No, the 7D isn't the cheaper 5D and won't lose value. The larger sensor is just that: a larger sensor.

The real concern is making your money back. Doesn't matter how much it deprecitates then. Just upgrade when the nexT batch comes out.

I really want to get rid of my 5D now but I'm waiting for a few jobs first.

and other than the better light sensitivity and difference in the field of view, the full frame sensor doesn't improve the quality of the image (for video) right? or am i missing something?

Full frame is great for pictures, but I like the 7D sensor size for cinematic production.

"Better" DOF is an interesting term...I'd be really interested to know why someone would need better shallower DOF than the 7D can offer. Extreme artistic choice, I guess, but not really something I could see using in real footage.

Really, rather than being afraid of the 5D's firmware upgrading dating the 7D, I'm more concerned about the Scarlet or the next Panasonic/Nikon/Sony/Canon offering which may really be a large sensor CMOS video camera that fixes a lot of issues present with any of the DSLRs.

I sincerely do not think that it's that more light sensitiive in video mode. The field of view isn't always a plus either. Needing to shoot at 5.6 severely decreases any advantage the sensor has over the 7Ds.

7D is also cleaner at lower isos. Definitley cleaner at higher isos.

I wouldn't bother investing in old tech. A firmware upgrade sounds nice but tech moved so fast that I'm sure in the next few months improvements in new releases will be available.

Yes, yes and yes

Actually if you follow those references you'll see that it was updated to say that the menu we were looking at was not from the 5D2 but from the new 1D. I saw that same video a month ago and thought it was the 7D. But in any case those Gizmodo kind of sites seems to always get things wrong. Watch that presentation they are referencing for yourself and you'll see that there is no mention of 60p for the 5D2...so far only 24p (according to the official announcement by Canon). Can this change? Sure.

...Well it's about time somebody laid it out there. I totally agree....lol

Even if the next sensor cam was APXxx sized sensor I'm more interested in the ugraded software/hardware and what it could offer me. But right now...I'm happy with what I got.

But the 5D doesn't do what you want, sooner. Why "upgrade" to a product that doesn't do what you want?

No, there are several people speculating on it, but no official statement from Canon that I know of. And that meeting where the menus were shown, it turns out the menus were *not* from a firmware-upgraded 5D, they were from a 1D.

I am unaware of any official Canon statement saying that anything other than 24P is coming to the 5D.

So hey, if you like the 5D better, for its own merits, go ahead and swap -- but at least be sure of what you're getting into. As far as I understand it, the firmware-upgraded 5D is supposed to appear sometime in the next six months, and it will have 24p and 30p. No mention yet of whether it'd have 25p, 50p, or 60p (from any official Canon source).

Exactly. I'm pretty certain that the DSLR thing is a fad, and we're putting up with a lot of hassle to get the shallow DOF at a cheap price point, but once there's a relatively hassle-free purpose-built video camera that has none of the drawbacks, I think the DSLR thing will disappear (or at least fade down to the folks who are scraping for every penny and a DSLR is the only thing they can afford).

I'm pretty old...I remember the folks who owned plumbicons going on about all we "poor" folks who couldn't afford anything but our toy chip cameras...how they'd never match the beauty and warmth of plumbicons or even the staticons. I have three of those plumbicon paper weights rotting in a barn in Texas. LOL!

...and oh the arrogance from the online suite folks when I took a huge risk and decided to online on an Avid from a D-Vision EDL. But...but...but...the resolution is so bad and you'll have to go to tape to distribute...and...and...and...

They were wrong too.
