7D Movie Issues...

Tonight I shot my first video with the 7d in low lighting. When I viewed it afterwords, it showed up as very chopping, etc (see video included). The choppy look was something I received while trying to get to doctors.I was shooting at 24 fps. Below is a link to the movie.

Thanks for any help.

Looks like you're in a low light situation where the only help you have with illumination are the strobe lights that make the rolling shutter issues stand out like crazy.

Though it looks like the issue was made worse with high shutter speed. Were you shooting at 1/100 or something? For that situation I would go no higher than 1/30 due to the strobe lights. Of course I would probably either try to light up the scene with an arri 1k or pick up my HMC150 instead.

Tough situation to bring an HDSLR to nonetheless.

Hi Mich,

To me, the video actually looked pretty smooth, but appeared as if it had been shot with a pretty fast shutterspeed (like Michael No. 1 mentioned).

Any chance you can tell us the shutterspeed for your shot?

Thank you both for the reply. I am almost positive I shot it at 1/50th shutter. I am new to the video and had read earlier in the day that if I am shooting 24fps, I should at the most double my shutter to 1/50th. I do need to see if this 7d has a manual exposure adustment like when I used the 5dmarkII...but like you mentioned, maybe light was too low ultimately to shoot like I wanted to...thanks again!

The camera records an image using a rolling shutter method

meaning the top of the frame is exposed about 1/30th of a second after the bottom of the frame

any disco light that flashes for less than 1/30th of a second will not be recorded over the whole frame

hence your stripes

wrong camera for the job

Yep, that's rolling shutter. There is absolutely nothing you could do to get a DSLR to perform well whiel shooting video under a storbe light. For that matter, pretty much any CMOS sensor fails in strobe-lighting conditions: this has been a long-time complaint of the RED people, as well.

There have been lots of wonderful low light pub/nightclub footage shot on the 7D (I shot some! ;-) here) but you do have to stay away from strobes.
