Hey There I found this photo on a skateboard site and I want to know why that would mount the 7d to the hvx? thanks

Guessing HVX would be for normal perspective and 7D would have a fisheye mounted on it. That's actually not a bad idea for skateboard videography. The 7D could also be used for stills while the HVX shoots video....but my guess is fisheye with HVX as normal cam. 7D doesn't appear to have a fisheye on it in this photo though but it's hard to tell. For those of you unfamiliar with skateboard videography, fisheye shots are often used extensively. Probably also why it's mounted on the hot shoe and not the 1/4 inch hole further back...because camera would get in the fisheye shot...which could be awesome actually.

Maybe just because they can? :2vrolijk_08:

Seriously, the pose and all suggests that maybe they just wanted to be funny and put their b-cam 7D on the camera lights ball mount...

But skate-video always has been pushing the limits and maybe i´m missing sth I haven´t thought of...

My first thought would be stills + Video. I don't know about skate vids but surfing productions are generally pretty tight budget wise - if they can send only one guy on a trip to shoot both stills and video, then they will! So, espiescially in places like Hawaii, Mexico, Bali etc where the magazines/companies regularly send their teams on a shoot, you see alot of side by side setups on a tripod.

send him a message and ask him. there are a million possibilities but he will tell you the real reason

I bet it is just because he wanted to hold the camera on his shoulder and that is a quick and cheap way to do it, if you already own a hvx

HVX is not a shoulder mount camera.

Whether or not he was doing this I think having fisheye and a normal angle at the same time is a great idea for skateboard videography!

Fisheye and normal angle won't really work that well I think.
If you use a fisheye to film skateboarding your going to be following them on a skateboard (filming a bunch of tricks in a line) the normal angle would just be a shaky bunch of pants filmed.
The other reason your going to be using a fisheye for skateboarding is when the skater is skating a stair set or gap, and you will be almost right under them for 'sick angles d00d'. I guess its just for poops & giggles ^^
Or perhaps for stills & video, but I'd be surprised if that worked well.
