7D Mishap

So let me start out by saying that right now I am a nervous wreck.

I was filming a game today with my 7D, and it took a fall from about 4 feet onto a running track. The lens appeared to take most of the shock. My 28-135 was shattered in the middle and busted up. I looked at the camera body and it APPEARS to be physically ok. I shot some more footage and tested many functions- seems to still work properly. Can anyone offer me any advice? Are there any common problems from drops I should be looking for? Should I be taking it to a canon service center? Thanks in advance.

Hi 711 sorry to hear of the mishap. I myself have had this scare with other cams
and unfortunately its the best way to learn.

All you can do is test test test and count your losses.
If the cam fell on the lens strong enough to break the lens then the collimation might be affected when you use other lenses. I would inspect the mount very carefully.

Ok, thanks. I have checked the mount and I didn't see anything wrong. Although, I have no other ef lenses to test the sensors. I will definitely run some tests later today and examine the results. Thanks again.

Let us know how this turns out for future mishap reference, please.

I just keep remembering the video of the kid who repeatedly beat up his nikon (forgot the model, maybe the D3) and it kept shooting perfectly. He threw it off a balcony to a concrete floor, picked it up and shot with it. Zapped it in the microwave, pulled it out with kitchen hot gloves, and shot with it. Then poured a bunch of household ingredients on it, washed it off with a big glass of water, then shot with it.

Shoot some video with the busted lens before you replace it. You'd have to pay for that effect otherwise! Sounds like your camera is OK but check up on the mirror, that's the most likely to have suffered.

dont have any advice, but just wondering why not strap around your neck while shooting?

I had just finished shooting(using the RS-5). And I had taken the 7D off for a second when it fell.

I could not find any apparent errors or glitches in the footage I had shot. Is it still worth sending it in to http://www.yelp.com/biz/canon-factory-service-center-irvine?

Also, I managed to snap the lens back together. The zoom grinds a little and you have to manually push the lens in to get full wide. The electronic contacts are ok. The aperture is now locked at 5.6 and up, cant get down to 3.5. And I heard the IS, so I assume that is still functioning. Is it worth sending this lens in for repair versus buying a used one?

Thanks

Eric

Please post video with the lens. Did you say some of the glass elements are shattered?

Hope the camera is OK.

Ive never heard of Square Trade before...

How are they? Can you get them any time after you buy it? I may have to do that...
