7D kit + accessories I'm buying - opinions?

Hey all,

well, after a good run with my DVX100, I've decided to delve into the world of shooting both stills and video on a Canon 7D. I'm fairly knowledgeable and experienced on the video/TV end of things, but I'm pretty green when it comes to DSLRs. Below are links to what I'll be purchasing - in your experience, is everything compatible and is there anything else you think I absolutely (money's tight so I'm going with the basics for now) need?

By the way, I already have a mic (plan to record audio through my DVX100 - is this a viable option?) tripod, camera bag, and other misc video/camera gear from my DVX100 set up that I plan to use with the 7D.

Thanks!

Hi jordini99,

Check to make sure your CF card is fast enough for the video mode. I was using an older lexar CF Card and found that I could only record 4 seconds of video. I switched to a newer sandisk extreme pro and was fine.

In terms of audio, do you mean you will be capturing audio seperately to your DVX?
and then syncing in post? The 7D has a stereo mic input. look at a more current solution. one that will allow you to leave the other rig at home!

any standard stereo mic can be input to your 7D for improved sound quality. I used a Holophone PortaMIC to capture surround ambience directly to the 7D ( a loaner from Headshots rentals) a local Toronto camera shop)
I got Dolby audio and best of all it is synced to my video.

The rest of your kit is fine. What lenses do you plan to use?
Anything prime , fast and shot wide open looks great with this camera. I have always enjoyed the canon 50mm f1.4 althought the f1.8 is less expensive, for stills I would love to see some material shot with the 7D video mode.

just wactch out for fast "video" style pans and slow shutter speeds, naturally it did not react so well. during my short tests.

Have fun and check out these two links, the first is a review of the mic i mentioned, check them out

Thanks Ryan!

I did some research on the card I'm getting (Kingston 16 gb 133X) and it should be fast enough.

And yes, for now I will be capturing audio separately to my DVX. I already have professional mics, but I don't think I can afford to spend any more money on an adapter to get it directly in to the 7D (unless someone here can recommend a cheap solution?) right now. I'd also like to wait until Magic Lantern is able to get audio metering in to the 7D.

As for the lens, I'm getting the 28-135mm kit lens. As I mentioned, money's tight at the moment, so getting some prime lenses will have to wait for a bit - just getting the basics for now.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Yes, this is the same CF card I bought. its FAST... I don't regret saving the $ by not buying the fastest cards out there. Im not sure if there is a way to check, but I must get at least 4 stills per second with this card. A UMDA card would get you 8 per sec with the 7D. But for us video guys who like to take pictures im not really sure why you would need that fast.

My next purchase will be a 32GB of the same type.

jordini99 as mentioned I used the Holophone PortaMIC straight into the camera. It has its own gain control and worked very well. other than going to a surround sound solution you would need an adapter or at the very least you could use a wireless solution with a 3.5mm output. if you already have access to this otherwise your talking dollars. either way it is still just stereo or mono.

I have a beachtek dxa 6vu that was used on my Sony vx 2000. Would this work on the 7D? If not, is there any Beachtek that will work now? Or are we waiting for a fix ?

Thanks
