Im getting an IS 'shake' from my Canon 28-135mm f3.5 USM with my 7D

Is this a lens issue or camera ? Stabilizer was on, MF, on Manual, handheld...

EDIT - Sorry, the video is now PUBLIC, I did not know where was a PRIVATE setting in Vimeo - duh..

I dont believe its because its handheld...the actually lens vibrates creating the issue..

private vid,DSLR's dont like to treat them handheld, tripod changes a lot ,it doesnt even have to be static on tripod and you can still move the camera while its on tripod , handheld just sucks .Dont expect videos shot handheld to look good.

Hand held can be tricky. The best thing to do if you want hand held is to use a wider lens like a 24mm. Then you can get close up if you want for shallower DOF. I know sometimes you want the compressed background look so always tripod the camera. The IS of lenses is screwy...maybe one day it will get improved upon.

Hello,

As you have likely discovered, shooting handheld can be difficult. Especially with an exceptionally light or heavy camera. Too light (the 7D) and slight movements in the hands, even your pulse, can be seen in the footage. Too heavy and you get all shaky trying to hold the thing up.

Unfortunately, longer lenses show the shake more than wider lenses. So when you can, get right up on whatever you are shooting at stay at the wide end.

IS helps - take a look at your footage with it off - but isn't so much a "solution" as it is assistance. It does give the footage a sort of floating quality...a bit odd, if you ask me.

Also, when you put you camera on a tripod, you will want to turn IS off. It will try to compensate for the already smooth motion of your pans and tilts and can give odd effects.

I talked to my Canon repair place and took it in for their advice.....They said the 'non pro' and even 'pro' lenses were 'never intended for video', hence the problems. As you see in the soccer video, its not handheld shake, its from the USM and IS, and apparently its worse when the lens is extended and higher speeds....So for this lens, its a no go, better for other 'pro' lens, ie Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS....
