7D is a major rip-off in Australia...

Price just came in for the 7D down here...and it's for the body only...they wan't $3000AUD (Australian Dollars)....

Ted's is one of the biggest retailers of cameras down here too...

The 7D body retails in the US for $1700...and considering our dollar currently buys 0.84USD, that should work out to be $2027...not $3000!

Might as well stop researching the 7D and just grab a GH1...can get that for $2299AUD.

One last option though...my best friend is coming back from Japan next week...there is always the option that he could grab me a 7D from Japan...I wonder if they have PAL 7D's there? Anybody know?

Maybe it is because I have an undergrad in economics and a masters in finance, but these posts make me put my head in my hands every time.

Prices in different regions are not simply based on exchange rate. There are a ton of factors like taxes on the end user, tariffs on the importing agent, relative income levels, cost of business differences for the same company in different countries, and the list goes on.

I dunno about that man. I was a camera salesmen for two-years at a rather large electronics store, and everytime we got a new camera in, it was always $1000AUD above the store's cost price.

The GH1 was going for $3300AUD here. Two-months later, everyone is selling it for $2300AUD. And from my salesmen experience, and after speaking with my old boss a few hours ago (who is still the manager of the electronic store I used to work at), Canon's pro DSLR cameras rarely ever drop in price (unlike Panasonic, Sony, et al). It will most likely be $3000AUD for a while...

What about the option of importing from the US? There'd be a tax hit for sure...but wouldn't it still work out better?
(or alternatively going there for a holiday and using it for a couple months! Better to put the $1000 to airfare/holiday!)
I guess warranty is the issue...but I haven't had a Canon warranty issue yet on there slr's...and if it came to it one could probably just send it back anyway for repair.

Don't really agree with this at all. In the end the consumer has to like it or lump it which seems pretty unfair. I purchased almost every single bit of my camera gear from the US because prices were often a third if not double the price here in good old oz. When you're buying a decent amount of stuff that quickly adds up to thousads of dollars difference.

There is nothing to disagree about, this is quite literally microeconomics 101. Prices are not simply the price of the origin then multiplied by the exchange rate.

In Europe for example, manufacturers have to have stronger and longer warranties than companies in the US. The cost of covering items for sometimes 4 or 5 times as long as in the US coupled with having to cover MORE issues means the company has to price the product higher.

And you bastards in Australia should be happy that you are entering your 19th consecutive year without a recession

Pnasonic's suggested RRP for the GH1 was AUD $3200. As it started to reach the shops, they are sold in the $2200 to $2500 range.

The retailers will come to their senses very soon.

Yeah take that USA! lol.

I do understand your point but I'm just saying it's a very tough sell to the consumer paying a very large price variance.

Ted's always flog stuff for top dollar, when the online retailers start to list it it should be in the $2500-$2800 range. I bought my MKII from digital best buys, they had the best deal with a local warranty at the time. The other options are to get one from the US or HK but I think it might be quicker to get one in AUS because they might be backordered in the US for a while like the GH1 but they should be shipping in much great quantity than the GH1 so who knows. There's GST plus shipping plus customs clearance which will add over $300 to the cost, lets say $2400 in total so if an online store has them listed for a couple of hundred more it's probably worth it for the local warranty.

I think if you import something that's say $2000...you pay $350 extra on tax etc when it goes through customs, I think.

Anything over a grand you pay 10% on if memory serves me right. Damn customs got my HVX.

Just got my 7D Invoice.

Just got my 7D Invoice.

Just got my invoice from Quality Camera. $2199 + GST = $2399.00. I thought of getting it from the US, but by the time you do the conversion from US$1700 + shipping + GST entry, I really don't think it's worth it. Plus QC's units come with Canon Australia warranty and the delivery queue may be quicker than US back-orders.

Congratulations mate!! Did they give you an ETA on when you will get it??

Late Sept/early Oct. Now I have to get all that Zacuto stuff and Sandisk cards.....

Cool.

I wish I could afford the Zacuto stuff. If I go 7D, it's gonna be just the camera, memory cards, and a cheap EF series prime with manual focus...

I want 35mm EF f1.4...but that's $1900AUD...dunno what to get instead...?
