7D impressions...

Except that in reality, it simply doesn't. Because all that extra sharpness from the lens is thrown away; the movie mode only uses about 10% of the sensor's capability so 90% of that sharpness is tossed out.

If you compare side by side, as Kholi has done, the results are pretty much indistinguishable.

I'm not sure what lenses barry has used but I have used 20+ lenses on my 7d, many rated to be VERY sharp, and I can tell the difference in 1080p freeze frames of video between different lens sharpness. I can tell the difference between takes when I change lenses and high quality sharp lens do make a difference in picture sharpness. My sharpest nikkon prime and my tamron 2.8's are noticeably sharper than my sigma primes and Canon zooms. I can tell a difference between the 2000+ mtf lens and those rated 1500+ mtf.

In video though? I'd love to see some frame grabs from recorded video. I've been comparing some brand-new Zeiss ZFs against 30+ year-old CZ Jena lenses, and the stock lens, and there just isn't a real sharpness difference. There's an aliasing difference, and there's a huge difference in terms of still photography, but not actual resolved detail. At least among what I've been testing.
