7D HDMI Output during Recording.. Is it HD or SD?

This sounds ridiculous but I need to ask..

Is the HDMI output on a 7D while recording video HD? 1080i/p? I had two cameramen today tell me that once you hit the record button, while in video mode, that the camera only outputs SD from the HDMI output and that pulling focus becomes a problem..

Can someone comment on this?

If you have overlays on, it's SD.

If you turn off overlays (INFO button) then it becomes 720p-ish because the 3:2 image of the LCD display is pillar-boxed in a 1080i signal. Should be good enough for focusing (depending on what you're using for monitoring, of course).

I was under the impression that the Singnal on the 7d out is full 1080, this is how the guys in europe are getting the 1080 out of the matrox mini and renderding 4:4:4 color.

there are links around!

Xbourque, Is 720ish stable enough to transcode from the HDMI out to an NTSC, or SDI signal? Need to use the camera as a live video source. Don't need to be recording when I do it. Any ideas? john

7D has HD output during recording

The 7D HDMI output while recording is almost 1080... a slight bit is cropped due to Canon's video output, but the signal is still WELL into what would be considered the HD range (unlike the 480p output of the 5D and t2i). I haven't done an exact pixel count, but I'd guess around a 800 or 900p-ish signal. Here is a decent demo of the 7D vs t2i differences:

Wouldn't seem to matter for those wanting th record the signal instead of using the cards - the little red dot is in both pictures.

And for owners of the T2, the viewing screen is more then enough to focus and such. People make huge deal about HDMI out, but for run and gun film makers, it would seem to be of little importance.

Is it a feature I'd like to have? Sure. Is it a deal breaker (even if the GH2 has it)? Not for me it isn't.

And thanks for posting the video!
