7d frame rate mess with cineform neo scene

Hello all,
Maybe one of you fine people can help me.
I downloaded a trial of neo scene today and installed it onto my windows 7. All went well. I tried to convert some canon 7D 1080p 25f video and it seems to go well. In the 'pref' window I selected 'maintain frame rate' and 'high' setting.

When checking the converted video I saw it had 333333 frames per second. Yes, that's right, 333333fps. When playing, it plays super fast in windows media (though not as fast as 333333 fps but really fast) and when trying to load it to PPro it crashes with a timecode error.

I tried all the different settings in HDLink (there aren't that many), and still getting the same result weird frame rate. The thing is that in different videos I get different frame rate, but none is correct. Some are 3333368.33 fps, others are 55553336 fps (I guess depending on the length of the video).

Can anybody help here? I've heard only good things about Neo Scene and 7D and was ready to buy before I tried. Glad I decided to try first and hope I'll find out what did I do wrong.

Thanks.

Just downloaded the trial. I run Windows 7 64-bit. Cineform's site states that the conversion can be either MOV or AVI. Since my camera is a Canon EOS 7D and produces MOV files, I would like to convert to Cineform MOV.

However, the option does not appear in the preference window (HD Link).

As for your problem, the avi conversions I have done appear to be just fine. I'm not sure, however, if they are significantly better than the source files, although they seem to render faster. I converted to 24fps and the "properties" show 23 (guess the rounded to the next lowest integer.

Does your HD Link window give you the choice as between avi or MOV?

It says 23 because it is 23.976 (24p).

And you want to render to .avi if you are on windows. Don't worry that your source 7d clips are .mov wrapped.

OP, sorry I don't have an answer to your question.

No I did not have the choice of AVI and MOV, only AVI. Dont know why they AVI but what the heck. I still didnt get the conversion to work for me. I'm starting to give up and edit natively. I just choose the XDCam profile on cs3 and it seems to do the job. I did opena ticket on the cineform website so hopefully someone will help.

I envy you for getting this to work.

What editing SW you're using?

cheers.

William, I really don't understand "wrapped". It would seem that a MOV file converted to .avi in Cineform and then rendered, in Vegas Pro as an mp4 (MOV) file would cause degradation.

I want to end up with an H.264 video as that is the preferred format for Vimeo.

At the end of the day, what is the primary advantage of Cineform Neo Scene ... increased speed in post processing or improvement of video quality ... understanding that I don't need to convert 24p as that is the source format.

I had a very similar problem with Neoscene when converting 5D2 files. Turns out I didn't have Quicktime installed on the machine I was using and Neoscene depends on Quicktime codecs/file info to operate properly. Once I installed Quicktime, Neoscene began working without problem.

Hope that helps!

Windows and Vegas both work better with .avi files as opposed to .mov files. When you transcode to Cineform with neoscene, whether you go with .mov or .avi it is the same codec, just contained within a different wrapper. The actual footage will be the same.

So:

7D (h.264 .mov) > Cineform (.avi) > Vegas Render (h.264)

=

7D (h.264 .mov) > Cineform (.mov) > Vegas Render (h.264)

where quality is concerned. The difference is how nicely your editing system and OS play with the files. The advantage to Cineform is the ability to actually get real time playback out of your editor, and it converting to 10bit 4:2:2 color space. You won't gain any information, but it will hold up better to many generations compared to a very lossy system like h.264. Especially if you are going between programs like AE and such, requiring many renders.

Man, you are a star! it works like a charm now. The neoscene installer should detect a missing quicktime if it has issues with missing quicktime.

All the best mate. thanks a lot.

Glad to help! I'm new to video so it's likely the only help I can give until I get some more experience. :embarasse

FWIW, I filed a trouble ticket with the Cineform folks about it and they got back to me with the solution within 24 hours. I was pretty impressed with the quick customer service. I agree tho - Neoscene should just alert you that the Quicktime files are missing. Prolly be worth suggesting to the Cineform folks.

Cheers!

wow.. Its converting to 10bit 4:2:2 color space is very good for Visual effects users.. because the visual effects and keying will be fine..
thank you
