7D Focusing

So from the sounds of it the 7D's auto focus while shooting video is garbage so how does one shoot a moving object and or work with focusing in general...

It seems like it gets such a small DOF that if your subject moves a few feet back or forward they will come out of focus

It's difficult. I think different lenses have a less severe DOF where you can have some room to play.. but generally from what I've seen of the 7d and from playing with it a bit, you kinda have to set it up on a tripod.. get your actor/subject in focus, and then shoot.

I suppose to will be like with any DSLR though you could just shoot at an f-stop of something like f11 which would give a bigger DOF then something like f2.8 correct?

That is correct. Then perhaps raise the ISO or shutter speed to compensate for the smaller iris setting. You'll lose that film-like shallow DoF look of course, though.

First you have to have a Zfinder or something similar that has magnification, then practice makes perfect, keep practice shooting with someone walking toward you and away, soon you will be good at it, if you don't have somebody walking for you, practice on focusing on something close then far and back and forth like that will makes you better, as with anything, you have to practice.
You don't want to stop down for deep dof, the reason you bought this camera is for shalow dof, right?

@jordini99 Yeah I figured so but in some instances like action/skateboarding/biking etc shots having it with hardly any dof wouldn't matter to much and if im going to be setting up a shot I can get that amazing DOF in those situations still

@PSA1 I figured that was the next best option and I plan on practicing a ton with it. What is a Zfinder though?

I see what if im working it with a glide cam or something? Cant really hold it to my eye while i move with the glide cam....

You mush have not work with a glidecam before, you can't touch the camera when using it, so with or without viewfinder to focus doesn't matter, but using glidecam means you have to go to deep dof with this camera, and it will shows alot of flaws, fine for what you see on the internet but on a HDTV, aliasing is unusable for me.

I see, Yes I haven't used a glidecam before. This is actually going to be my first high end camera as a film student (seeing as how the price is right). So I am just thinking of things that I know I want to be getting in the near future which is glidecam, jib and perhaps a dolly.
