7D - First impressions

This is what I meant by the other post in the Slow Mo thread. I was REALLY hesitatnt about the 7D because of footage on Vimeo.

I guarantee you it's the compression, Nitsuj. Even Philip's footage wasn't represenative of what the raw looks like.

Thanks for posting the footage, Tim. Like the music and the tree to house creepy rack.

It's just right up in your face and much more unexpected than I thought. I didn't think the jaggies would be so bad considering the hype this camera has gotten. I gotta say I don't see them so much on the GH1. Jaggies is damn near impossible to get rid of. That is you can't do anything flattering to the image afterwards to mask them. I will have to look around at some other videos I suppose. Maybe I'm crazy but it just looks so obvious to me. *shrug* I'm still thinking the GH1 has better image but I'll have to look at a raw file I suppose. *shrug* I do like the feel of the OP's video though.

i ran around town for a bit today shooting some stuff. nothing special, just scenic crap of my downtown area.

my works player isn't the best. i'll have it on our youtube and vimeo page in HD in the morning. be warned, its nothing fancy. my boss said, "hey you got that fancy camera, go play with and put something on the site."

GH-1 videos may have been compressed better. This camera in 1080 looks like it has much less aliasing than the GH-1 in 1080.

Again. Straight out of the camera looks a lot different to me.

Yeah straight out of the camera would look different. I have noticed some 7D video with it not that noticeable. Maybe the compression rate was bad after all. Philip Bloom's latest blog doesn't look bad. Despite the fisheye he has on it all the time it looks pretty clean. But some videos online are really noticeable. Interesting about the 1080 aliasing on the GH1 vs 7D. I guess I don't see that yet but I would have to see the source files. Either way these are exciting times for video.

coming soon-

Looking forward to it. I didn't realize just how much bigger the 7D was compared to the GH1. I love the image my GH1 produces but I'm also trying to not be biased about it either. I believe most of the differences are purely aesthetics but it's interesting to know.

Yeah, looks like the jaggy artifacts are mostly from the vimeo compression.
I forgot what fall looks like, here in LA. Moody skies don't show off the dynamic range too much. Someone here in LA should take the 7D and walk Hollywood streets with it at noon - Kholi? Let everything go nucleur to see what the dynamic range in the highlights is like.

Aight. I'm not doing too much tomorrow aside from writing. I'll try to drive up to Hollywood at that time and just shoot some buildings.

The LAPD may have an issue with this. But if you do, aim for the TMZ office building first.

I was tired when I posted that last night. Don't interrupt your writing for my sake!!
Of course we would like to see any piece you do end up shooting with it.

Last night I shot side-by-side with the GH1 in low light, first at 800 ISO, then 200, then 320, properly exposing each using a light meter to make sure.

I'll post some stills and video later, but my initial conclusion is that for low light, the 7D kicks a$$. The resolution difference wasn't major. The 7D had more noise to the image, but had higher latitude. The major difference was banding/ macro-blocking. No contest there. 7D wins hands down.
Shooting a gradient on a flat wall that went from f22 to f2, the GH1 was in banding city, while the 7D at f11 didn't blow out and could see well into the shadows.

Also, at the same ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, the GH1 was about a half to 1 stop more sensitive. Different lenses might be the culprit there though.
