7D - First impressions

One annoying thing I've noticed about the video out is the white box it displays is really BRIGHT. Especially for low light shooting. You can move the box to the corner, but I haven't yet figured out how to turn it off, (haven't opened the manual yet) This is from the composite out

Tim mentions that one of the perks is that the QT files are editable right away, I thought we still had to convert to proress? Or do you edit natively and export finished product as proress? sorry for the confusion, still learning!

You can edit the H.264. However, H.264 is more of a delivery than an editing format, so its not really best for editing. It can be done, but its not really the best way, in my opinion.

I suggest H.264 -> ProRes (or equivalent) -> H.264 or other deliverable

I thought there was a thread somewhere in the past few days that said maybe turning off face detection or maybe auto-focus clears that white box from the display, but I may be mistaken. Of course now I can't find that thread anywhere (it might be wishful thinking on my part).

You certainly can edit the camera files directly, although I can't get more than about 3fps playback on my old G5. I converted to Prores HQ before any color correction/ rendering.

Not necessarily. The DVX/HMC/HPX etc. default shutter is 1/50 when shooting 24p as well. You really wont notice any difference between 1/48 & 1/50.

Yeah I know. I guess I'm just spoiled with the Sony EX cameras where you can even set the shutter to angle so you can stick to the usual film shutter angles, 180, 45 etc.
It would still be nice to have 1/48 in the 7D:cheesy:
Haven't checked if it can do 45 degrees angle.

Nothing wrong with shooting 25p. It will convert to 60i just as easily as 24p for broadcast. There are even well tested techniques to convert to 24p without pain.

If for movie making, why shoot 25p when you have 24p? Unless you're shooting for a TV station which demands so it doesn't make much sense.

Uploaded footage. It's real dirty, rough, hurtful at times, all the things your mother warned you of.. or nothing special at all.

Nice pick for the score. :)

Thank you for posting the video!

Did you only CC or did you also mess with in-camera image settings?

Looks good Tim Joy. Almost looks like Erie, PA in a way. I gotta say one thing that I am noticing is the jaggies on all the video. This was 1080p right? Curious.

Thanks! I wrote that little tune for a movie long ago and they didn't end up using it. :violin:

Here's the info from the vimeo page:

Here's a test of some extreme situations with the 7d. shot using a bad nikon to eos adapter, a 28mm 2.8 nikkor lens. 100 iso. 1/50th shutter speed. 24p 1080p.

color corrected in color and added grain to many shots. some shots are ungraded. tried some extreme grading like day-for-night and fake sunset/ gray clouds. i was very pleased how it held up. i didn't run into any major banding issues, but adding grain helps a lot.

shot using a custom picture profile based on the portrait setting, but with higher saturation and lower contrast. sharpness all the way down.

it's handheld and i left the shaky shots in there for anyone that want's to see the jello at it's worst. totally manageable, in my opinion.

Justyn- Yeah. I went a little crazy with the reds in the early hours of the morning. It's too saturated imo.

This is what I meant by the other post in the Slow Mo thread. I was REALLY hesitatnt about the 7D because of footage on Vimeo.

I guarantee you it's the compression, Nitsuj. Even Philip's footage wasn't represenative of what the raw looks like.

Thanks for posting the footage, Tim. Like the music and the tree to house creepy rack.

hi Tim, seeing as you seem to be winning Show-and-Tell right now, any way we can get some indoor low light stuff? I know I'm being impatient, but I need to know if I need to sell my GH1 now or if I can wait a bit.

thanks for humoring us.

Thanks! I didn't think to look at the Vimeo text yet.

I agree on the jello, there is some still there, but what are you gonna do. At least it doesn't jump at you. It sort changes the feel of shaky stuff and I guess we just have to be aware of that when we shoot something that requires that. However, the creative effect it will have on your camera movement is very small, so considering all the pros (sensitivity, S35 sensor, price, interchangeable lenses, form factor, decent CC, recording time on CFs, stealth look of stripped down config, etc) and the cons (must wait for Magic Lantern AGC fix, a little bit of jello, not 4:2:2, no swivel screen, etc) [sure I am forgetting something] this camera is a major winner.

Again, thank you for posting the video! I am very pleased with how much you were able to CC some of those shots without it breaking down! I will have to try adding some grain too.

I really liked the song too.

Do I hear... SIDE BY SIDE!!!!!!?

I'll do my best not to fall asleep and deliver a low light test.
