7D Batteries and alternate power

So the OEM batteries are really pricey... I ordered the ebay/ hong kong special 2 batteries and charger for $45! Nice! I hope they work out.

BUT -

What about a power adapter? I would like to setup with a huge battery for counterweight on the shoulder-mount, and it could simultaneously power an audio recorder too. I don't see a plug for external power on the body though. Is there something out there?

As far as I know, the only 3rd party battery solutions are not "smart" batteries that that the canon branded ones are, and they will also require you to use a different charger. They won't charge using the supplied canon charger.

I could be wrong, or that could have changed since last I looked into it. If they work, I *think* they will require their own charger, and will not give you the up to the minute battery life readout, etc. Kinda the same deal as with the hmc150 and 3rd party batteries.

we definitely looked into getting some dvxuser batteries made for the 5d/7d... but at the time the only option is like what i listed above... obviously we don't want to sell that :) If it changes though, we'll dang sure try and get our own manufactured if the demand is still high for these cams if/when that happens

Beware of after market batteries. Cannot depend on QC, a friend had some fuses blown with cheap chinese batts.

That's a great question. I'm contemplating the AC power supply as well, extra batteries + battery grip. It all depends on how long it lasts shooting 1080/24 w/ live view on. Can anyone do a test who already has one please?

I did 30 min of continuous video yesterday with a 3/4 charge and the batt meter never changed. If I had to guess, I'd say about 2 hours. Maybe with an EF lens it would be less?

Ah, well its a little more relieving. Now I have to decide whether the battery grip is worth it, or if 2-3 batteries + ac adapter makes more sense. Any input folks?

I'm looking at the battery grip since rechargeable AAs are quite good value, both dollar-wise and in terms of power delivery.

I will buy a grip when the third party ones come out. From most everywhere I have read the third party 5D grips are every bit as good as the Canon ones for 1/3 the cost.
