7D automatically stops recording

Hello peeps,

I have a friend with a really weird problem and I did google it but I got nothing for it. So, I'm only assuming that this issue doesn't really pop up so much.

Anyway, my friend's 7D automatically stops recording usually 5 seconds after she just started recording. She has noted that this happened more than 8 times out of a week. Also it takes her camera a while to turn on after she turned on the camera... (enabling live mode)

Usually it takes less than a couple seconds but her camera turns on typically 4-5 seconds after she flicked it on...

I have read the manual and didn't read anything on shutting off while recording or slowly turning on.

Figure I'll start her and make my way to question through Canon.

Has anyone else had this problem? Solutions? It is just a manufacture defect?

Thanks Guys.

I had this problem. memory card isn't fast enough. get a faster one. I use SanDisk extreme 60mb/s and works fine now.

I am up at Mammoth filming snowboarding and having the same problem...and knew it wasn't an overheat as I was powering off the camera in between and it was about 50 degrees out. (though I'm sure even in cold climates, the processor and chips can still get toasty) I've lost 4 great shots to it in just 2 days. It's the same vertical 4-step bar on the right side, a buffer bar I'm assuming. Some folks on cinema5d.com were discussing it and also say card speed.

I am shooting mostly 60p when it happens, but it has happened on a 30 and 24 also I believe. Cards are Transcend 133x 16GB. Thought those were fast enough and high enough quality? Apparently not, ditching them all when I get home. Recommendations for upgrade? I shot extreme sports and overcrank quite a bit.

Sandisk Extremes are the only cards I buy.

Some of my photographer friends shoot the oscars, emmys, and even though they're all Nikon guys they only use Sandisk Extremes so I figured hey I guess there's a reason.

:bath:
Some photographers only use Leica.

SanDisk cards, while excellent, are not much better than certain competing brands, like Transcend, A-Data, Lexar, PNY. Here's an extensive comparison to prove it: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9672

But would that explain the instances of unusually slow start-up time?

Try a faster card and if it resolves it - then yes, it would explain the slow start up time. In my specific case, I don't recall a slow start up time. However, every case is often different. Just ensure that the card being used (OP) is fast enough. The tech manual states 8mb/s, but these are often too slow (as I found out) - as already mentioned by a few people, just get a decent fast card, e.g. SanDisk extreme 60mb/s and if it doesn't work then you know its the camera.

i am having this same issue.. and i'm running the Sandisk extreme 90mbs, tried formatting it inside the camera, i'll keep the thread updated

Hello everyone I have been doing some research and this is what I found out. As long as the card is over 133X speed the card is fine. What I have discovered is the 7D only allows up to 4gigs on a continuious shoot this it stop automatically. The last thing is if you haven't upgrade to the latest firmware then you guys all need too. This upgrade stops or corrects a lot of these problems from happening. I hope this helps someone out I to am looking for the fix to allow continuious shooting with no stopping but I guess this is how Canon designed the camera.
