7d Audio NTG 2 vs H4n

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I wasn't sure if this should go to the audio section or the dslr section.

I've got a 7d and I'll be shooting some video over the summer and I'll be outdoors most of the time. I'll also probably end up doing one interview as well.

I can only afford either the h4n or a ntg 2 with an xlr to mini jack adapter.
If I could only have ONE which do you think would be better?

Thanks guys,
Root

Why not wait till the H1 (one track, 99 bucks, mounts to hot shoe). Out in a month or two.

Or just get an H2 (fairly cheap, easily available) and a cheaper mic that could plug into it via the mini plug (like a Rode Video Mic)?

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'll probably end up getting the NTG 2 one day so the XLR input for the h4n would help.

It's just a matter of which to get first.

Or, before buying a mic, instead of the H4n buy a Tascam DR-100 which also has XLR inputs and has better internal mics. Good luck!

i got the H4n first, because usually if i work on a bigger project, peopel have mics. In the times they dont, the h4n actually can record pretty darn good sound.

I finally got a mic, rode videomic, i run it through the h4n, and then out to my 7D.

Ive used XLR mics (other peoples), in my h4n as well.

works great

Good luck, Root. The NTG series mics are nice, however since you'll be recording on the 7D you'll be disappointed with the quality of the audio unless you have a constant audio level (AGC issues, etc). "Someday" us 7D folks may have Magic Lantern software for our gear but don't count on it. But if you're not too picky, then sure, use an NTG, Rode Videomic, etc. But later on when you can afford it, you'll definitely move to an off-camera recorder for important audio. OTOH, for my casual stuff I love the Rode Videomic since it's so light and convenient - on fun stuff, I'll use it over my NTG, Oktava, Senn 416T, etc.

Happy trails, Michael
