7D and the nanoFlash...works...but...

here's what bothers me:

1)would it be possible for a firmware update to change the kind of output data through hdmi?

2)and what will happen if i try to record it with nanoflash?
f.e.: if the output is what we have seen. is it 24, 25 or 30fps? assume it's 30fps and i try to record it with nanoflash with 1080p 25 or 24 fps, what will happen?

3)what's happening to the rolling shutter through hdmi output when you are not recording (this means what happens to the RS while watching live view through hdmi, in case i only want to record with nanoflash)

4) i tested the 7d with really fast udma cf-cards. i realized a really ugly shutter effect on vertical lines while panning horizontally (shutter 1/50 s, 25 fps). i don't mean the RS effect, it is just a shuttering which seems to be way more heavy than on an analog movie camera, a professional hd-camera or every other semi-pro camera which can do 25p. will this shuttering also be put out hdmi or does it come from transfering the chip raw data to h.264?

what do you think? what do you know?

Post the clip so we can see what you're talking about and take some guesses as to what's causing it.

I'm going to take a wild guess: What you're seeing is image tearing on playback. It looks like half the frame is being cut...

This is an issue not with the footage itself but rather with your computer. Your computer is either not fast or not efficient enough in decoding 1080p H.264. H.264 is more resource intensive to decode than any other camcorder codec commonly in use. The only way to determine whether the issue is in the footage itself is to step through the footage frame by frame.

If you have you lens in AF mode, there will be no focus box when you get to the fullest output possible.

*edit* Nevermind, I just realized my cam was in face detection AF mode...

I would think so, but don't hold your breath.

I only tried it with the nano in 24p and 720 60p modes, both of which output the live signal in a 1080i stream. I thought that was especially weird for the 60p mode. For PAL I would imagine it outputs 25p via 1080i and probably outputs 50p as a cross-converted 25 1080i.

I don't know exactly what you mean by this? The RS is the same whether the signal is seen via live HDMI or camera recording playback.

I think what you want to know is what is the output from the cam's live HDMI signal when you aren't recording internally.

ANSWER: You get a 4x3 embedded image in the 16x9 HD live output. It shows you the native 4x3 video image with semi-transparent gray letterbox bars to help you see the what the 16x9 frame will actually crop to.

This sounds like a computer playback issue. The only way to know for sure is to step through a clip frame by frame.

Hello lads,

Yes, this could be a PC playback issue. You need to enable vsync. Also it could be a fluorescent light issue also.

Try this player, this is basically the best player (hardware accelerated on GPU) for playing back unedited video from the 7D.

Search for "Splash Lite" on google. Its from Mirillis.

If using nvidia go to the control panel and enable triple buffering and Vsync hold to "forced on". If you are in Windows 7 you might need D3DOverrider which forces vsync to on since Nvidia screwed up vertical sync in their last gen drivers.

Now go try that player and let me know how awesome it is. ;-)

You wouldn't happen to be the developer would you?

Absolutely not. But after messing around with VLC and the issues it has with Vsync in non DX9 mode render I found this player to be great at quickly playing the 7D mov files without having to mess with codecs etc, so I'm just making a suggestion, a bit over excited.

No worries.....it was all in jest (I forgot the smiley).

Oooh, that's interesting ... an Intensity Pro, but connects through USB3.0 instead of through a PCI slot! Cool.

Windows only though, so that'll disappoint a lot of folks, but for those with a USB 3 laptop, that looks very interesting indeed.

its a bit sad I am a Mac Type too. Expresscardslot Adapter USB3 will come one day ( hope so) and booting in Win is possible
