720p...

According to the charts you can fit more 720p on a P2 card than DVCPro 50... How does this work??

720 24pn only records the native framerates, while in DVCPro 50 you can't record only the native framerates.

720p is more highly compressed than DVCPRO50 is. DVCPRO50 is recorded at a 3.3:1 compression ratio, 720p is a 6.7:1 compression ratio.

full DVCPRO-50 (50i) is 50mbps

full DVCPRO-HD 720/50p is 100mbps
but DVCPRO-HD 720/24pN only records 24 fps, not 50fps. .. quick math says that the bandwidth of 720/24pN should require about 48mbps. ... which is less than the 50mpbs of DVCPRO-50

Minor correction: 720/24pN requires 40 megabits, not 48. Other than that, yes, exactly. And the reason it's a lower bandwidth than DVCPRO50 is that it's more highly compressed than DVCPRO50.

DVCPRO50 uses extremely mild compression for extraordinarily clean footage.

interesting... I often shoot 720 HD even for SD projects, but maybe I'm better off using DVCPRO 50?

If your project is solely destined for SD release, then yes you'd get better results from shooting DVCPRO50 in the first place. (unless you're shooting 480/60i; that doesn't look as good from the HVX).

I don't understand...Then what is the best way to get 480/60i from this camera? Or do you mean compared to a DVX100? It doesn't look as good as what?
Lucy please 'splain.

yea the chips on the hvx produce kinds crappy 60i 480. iwonder if its 1080 is crappy also. ive never used it in my life.

oh ok cool. i actually wanna start shooting some 1080i and 60p so see what it looks like on a hdtv.

1080/60i looks brilliant. It's just 480/60i that has issues with excess aliasing. 480/24p and 480/30p look great too. The only question mark is 480/60i, and it frequently looks fine, but on diagonal lines it's more obviously aliased and stair-steppy than it should be.

So what about shooting 720 60P and exporting to 480/60i. Same deal? The one project I did at 720 30PN and center cropped down to SD 480/60i looked beatiful. (I usually shoot 720 24PN down to letterbox DVD)

Really?! Sweet. I am gonna try it out tommorow. Im shooting at the NAtural history museum in NY. Can anyone say....... Dinosaurs?

It depends on where you do the export. If you do it in-camera, you'll run into the same issue. If you do it in post, you can totally avoid the issue and get fantastic results (as you found).
